The current system uses the Lockheed Martin Aegis Weapon System and the Raytheon RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 ( SM-3 ).

The Aegis BMD system, coupled with the RIM-161 Standard missile ( SM-3 ), has also demonstrated a limited capability as an anti-satellite weapon against satellites in the lower portion of low Earth orbit.

For example, today's most advanced navigation systems are embodied within the Anti-ballistic missile, the RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 leverages GPS, IMU and ground segment data in the boost phase and relative position data for intercept targeting.

This was the first test of an operationally configured RIM-161 Standard missile 3 ( SM-3 ) interceptor and the fifth successful test intercept using this system.

The deployment occurred the same month, consisting of warships equipped with the Aegis RIM-161 SM-3 missile system, which complements the Patriot missile systems already deployed by American units.
