In the following May 2010 UK general election, the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition, launched in January 2010 and backed by Bob Crow, the leader of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union ( RMT ), other union leaders and the Socialist Party among other socialist groups, stood against Labour in 40 constituencies.

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition plans to contest the 2011 elections, having gained the endorsement of the RMT June 2010 conference.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers ( RMT union ) held a conference in January 2006 to address what it calls ' the crisis in working class representation ', in which Socialist Party councillor and Campaign for a New Workers ' Party chair Dave Nellist was invited to speak.

At the 2008 CNWP conference a discussion forum was hosted by the campaign which was addressed by RMT general secretary Bob Crow, PCS Vice-President John McInally, Socialist Party councillor Dave Nellist, Labour left Simeon Andrew and RESPECT representative Rob Hoveman.

In March 2009, the Socialist Party participated in No to EU – Yes to Democracy, a left-wing alter-globalisation coalition led by RMT union leader Bob Crow, for the 2009 European Parliament elections.

However, following the election, the failure of the RMT union to commit itself to a successor organisation to this campaign ( whose name was disliked by most AGS members as it implied an anti-European stance which they do not hold ) and its transformation into a new organisation ( Trade Union and Socialist Coalition ) which is politically and organisationally dominated by the Socialist Party, has led the AGS to withdraw from this group.

In 2003, some Scottish branches of the RMT, affiliated to the Scottish Trades Union Congress, voted to donate some of their funds to the Scottish Socialist Party.

Since then, the unions have retained close institutional links with the Party, although these arrangements have been strained significantly in recent years, with the RMT and Fire Brigades Union severing their links.

The RMT is affiliated to the Left pressure group the Labour Representation Committee ( LRC ), which is named after the original LRC of 1900, and works to restore socialist principles within the Labour Party.

Some local branches of the RMT, such as Grimsby, are still affiliated to their local Constituency Labour Party ( CLP ).

The RMT announced in March 2009 that it would be standing a slate of candidates in the 2009 European Parliament elections under the banner of No to EU – Yes to Democracy, a broad left-wing alter-globalisation coalition which aims to offer an alternative to the " anti-foreigner " and pro-business policies of the UK Independence Party.

" RMT have made it clear we expect managers to abide by the existing job security agreements and we would simply not be doing our job as a union if we allowed the tube to treat our members as cannon fodder who can be hired and fired at will ", adding that " It wasn't our members who created the downturn and we will not be bullied into accepting that they should be forced to pay for an economic crisis that was cooked up by the bankers and the politicians.

Workers Power members in the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers won support for a resolution calling for a conference to discuss the formation of a new workers party, which led to the RMT sponsored conference in London in January 2006 on the crisis of working class representation, which was attended by over 350 people.

The area has also been for many years home to a number of trades union head offices ( including the NUJ, RMT, UNISON, NUT, Community and UCU ).

No2EU secured 153, 236 votes, compared to an RMT membership of 80, 000.
