* 189 Class: Certain locomotives of DB Schenker Rail class 189 are operating primarily in the Netherlands, they are distinguished by large white contrast areas on the front sides ( otherwise painted red ).

In addition to the formal Network Rail definition, the ECML is sometimes regarded as including the Edinburgh to Aberdeen Line, on which some East Coast services continue beyond Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen, running mostly in view of the east coast via Kirkcaldy, Dundee and Arbroath .| North of Edinburgh it includes the red cantilever Forth Bridge, and at Dundee the curved Tay Bridge, both crossing wide river estuaries.

The West Rail Line () is one of the MTR lines in Hong Kong, indicated by the colour deep red purple.

Metro Rail is the rapid transit rail system consisting of six separate lines ( the red, purple, blue, Expo, green, and gold lines ) serving 80 stations in the Los Angeles County, California area.

The red line, which is one of six lines forming the Metro Rail rapid transportation system opened in stages between 1993 and 2000.

Northern Rail has started to replace the silver and red Metro livery with Northern Purple and Blue.

Orange Line vehicles, called Metro Liners, are painted in the silver and gray color scheme of Metro Rail vehicles.

Most of the railway track is managed by Network Rail, which as of 2010 had a network of of standard-gauge lines, of which are electrified.

Tramlink runs on a mixture of street track shared with other traffic, dedicated track in public roads, and off-street track consisting of new rights-of-way, former railway lines, and one section of alignment, though not track, shared with a third rail electrified Network Rail line.

Singapore has a Mass Rapid Transit ( MRT ) and Light Rail Transit ( LRT ) rail system consisting of five lines.

Following a pre-1999 election commitment to consider the feasibility of introducing fast rail services to regional centres, in 2000 the government approved funding for the Regional Fast Rail project, upgrading rail lines between Melbourne and Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Traralgon.

However, Hutchison also introduced interchange symbols ( circles for Underground-only, squares for connections with British Rail ) that were black and allowed multiple lines through them, as opposed to Beck who used one circle for each line at an interchange, coloured according to the corresponding line.

It also includes major rail lines used for journeys within London, such as London Overground routes, and Tube stops with connections to National Rail services, rail links to airports, and river boats.

Rail transport in Venezuela has been practically non-existent since the 1950s ( with only one line operating ), but the IAFE is currently working on several lines, hopefully connecting most of Venezuela via railway by 2020, which, if achieved, would lead to a significant improvement in the countries ' transport infrastructure.

Congress passed the Regional Rail Reorganization Act of 1973 ( the " 3R Act ") to salvage viable freight operations from Penn Central and other failing rail lines in the northeast, mid-Atlantic and midwestern regions, through the creation of ConRail.

Pennsylvania broad gauge was used on the former ( defunct ) Pittsburgh Railways and the defunct West Penn Railways () and is still used on the current Pittsburgh Light Rail, on some SEPTA lines such as the Philadelphia streetcar lines and the Philadelphia Market-Frankford subway line ( & ) as well as in New Orleans ().
