" Rand's former protégé Nathaniel Branden referred to Rand's " especially powerful appeal to the young ," while Onkar Ghate of the Ayn Rand Institute said Rand " appeals to the idealism of youth.

A former associate and one-time romantic partner of novelist-philosopher Ayn Rand, Branden also played a prominent role in the 1960s in promoting Rand's philosophy, Objectivism.

After reading The Fountainhead and exchanging letters and phone calls with Ayn Rand, Branden and his then girlfriend Barbara Weidman visited Rand and her husband Frank O ’ Connor at their Los Angeles home in 1950, and the four became close friends, with Branden and Rand in particular sharing a vivid interest in philosophical exploration and development.

After the publication of Rand ’ s most explicitly philosophical novel, Atlas Shrugged, and sensing an interest on the part of Rand ’ s readers in further philosophic education, Branden created in 1958 the Nathaniel Branden Institute ( NBI ) to disseminate Rand ’ s philosophy of Objectivism, by offering live and taped lecture courses by Rand, Branden, and a variety of other Objectivist intellectuals ( including Alan Greenspan, whom Branden had brought into Rand ’ s fold ).

" It is part of the Objectivist movement that split off from the Ayn Rand Institute ( ARI ) in 1990 due to disagreements over whether the philosophy of Ayn Rand's Objectivism was a " closed system " or an " open system.

Then, in 1968, Rand publicly broke with Branden and published an article denouncing him and accusing him of a variety of perceived offenses, such as philosophic irrationality and unresolved psychological problems.

In 1968, Rand learned of the affair, and, in response, violently condemned both Brandens, dissociated herself from them, and denounced them publicly.

Rand disagreed with a number of changes made by the Broadway producer and in amateur versions of the play, so in 1968 she re-edited the script for publication as the " definitive " version.

In the 1960s, Rand revised the text to eliminate most of the changes and had the " final, definitive version " published in 1968 with an introduction discussing the play's history.

The entire institute disbanded after Nathaniel Branden's break with Rand in August 1968.

In 1968 after a complex series of events, Rand expelled Nathaniel and Barbara Branden from the Collective.

Rand also describes a game played ( likely after European contact ) with hurleys, called wolchamaadijik.

He and his friend Danny Rand were recently drawn into the gang war between the Kingpin and Hammerhead after the latter targeted him to win over the Chinatown gangs to his cause.

Arriving in the city, Rand finds gleeman Thom Merrilin, whom he thought dead after an encounter with a myrddraal in The Eye of the World.

They had a daughter, Dominique ( who was named after the heroine of the novel The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand ).

Remington Rand already had a computing division however, after they had purchased the Eckert – Mauchly Computer Corporation in 1950.

The airline experienced a rapid expansion during this time, but also suffered its first accident ; one of the newly-delivered Ju 52s crashed after takeoff from Rand Airport in July 1937, with one reported fatality.

The airport was founded in 1952 as " Jan Smuts Airport ," two years after his death, near the town of Kempton Park on the East Rand.

Gold was discovered at Rand Mine near the site in 1895 and a mining camp quickly formed, and was named Rand Camp, both mine and camp were named after the gold mining region in South Africa.

The affair lasted until the publication of Atlas Shrugged in 1957, after which, according to Branden, Rand became depressed, and the affair, practically speaking, ended.

Branden reports that Rand remained psychologically dependent on him after this period, and eventually began pushing for a resumption of their affair ; his own marriage, meanwhile, was deteriorating, although he and Barbara were becoming closer as friends.

Among the ideas Rand pushed in Thoughts on Design was the practice of creating graphic works capable of retaining recognizable quality even after being blurred or mutilated, a test Rand routinely performed on his corporate identities.

Ethical egoists such as Rand who readily acknowledge the ( conditional ) value of others to an individual, and who readily endorse empathy for others, have argued the exact reverse from Rachels, that it is altruism which discriminates: " If the sensation of eating a cake is a value, then why is it an immoral indulgence in your stomach, but a moral goal for you to achieve in the stomach of others?

" It is therefore altruism which is an arbitrary position, according to Rand.

The ABC was largely forgotten until it became the focus of the lawsuit Honeywell v. Sperry Rand, the ruling of which invalidated the ENIAC patent ( and several others ) as, among many reasons, having been anticipated by Atanasoff's work.

Rand thinks the only social system consistent with this morality is full respect for individual rights, embodied in pure laissez faire capitalism ; and the role of art in human life is to transform man's widest metaphysical ideas, by selective reproduction of reality, into a physical form — a work of art — that he can comprehend and to which he can respond emotionally.

In September 1993, Namibia introduced its own currency, the Namibia Dollar ( N $), which is linked to the South African Rand at a fixed exchange rate of 1: 1.

Rand characterized Objectivism as " a philosophy for living on earth ", grounded in reality, and aimed at defining human nature and the nature of the world in which we live.

Rand argues that consciousness, " the faculty of perceiving that which exists ," is an inherently relational phenomenon.

Says Rand, " The fundamental concept of method, the one on which all the others depend, is logic.

The aspect of epistemology given the most elaboration by Rand is the theory of concept-formation, which she presented in Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology.

Psychology professor Robert L. Campbell says the relationship between Objectivist epistemology and cognitive science remains unclear because Rand made claims about human cognition and its development which belong to psychology, yet Rand also argued that philosophy is logically prior to psychology and in no way dependent on it.

The purpose of a moral code, Rand held, is to provide the principles by reference to which man can achieve the values his survival requires.

For Rand, all of the principal virtues are applications of the role of reason as man's basic tool of survival: rationality, honesty, justice, independence, integrity, productiveness, and pride — each of which she explains in some detail in " The Objectivist Ethics.

Objectivism holds that the only social system which fully recognizes individual rights is capitalism, specifically what Rand described as " full, pure, uncontrolled, unregulated laissez-faire capitalism.

Rand held that Romanticism was the highest school of literary art, noting that Romanticism was " based on the recognition of the principle that man possesses the faculty of volition ," absent which, Rand believed, literature is robbed of dramatic power, adding:

Most Objectivists who are also artists subscribe to what they call romantic realism, which is how Rand labeled her own work.

" Rand is also disparaged in one of the appendices concerning property, ostensibly written by Hagbard, which serves as an explanation of anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's views on the subject.

Loial warns Moiraine of a threat to the Eye of the World, which is confirmed by vivid and disturbing dreams Mat, Rand and Perrin have had.

Siuan tells Rand that he is the Dragon Reborn, which Rand denies.

In her " capitalism peace theory ," Ayn Rand held that the major wars of history were started by the more controlled economies of the time against the freer ones and that capitalism gave mankind the longest period of peace in history — a period during which there were no wars involving the entire civilized world — from the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1815 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914, with the exceptions of the Franco-Prussian War ( 1870 ), the Spanish-American War ( 1898 ), and the American Civil War ( 1860-1863 ), which, notably, occurred in perhaps the most liberal economy in the world at the peak of the industrial revolution.

He is also comparable to a degree to Ragnar Danneskjold, a libertarian pirate in the Ayn Rand novel Atlas Shrugged, which receives several mentions in the chronicles.
