Johannes Rau (; 16 January 193127 January 2006 ) was a German politician of the SPD.

Rau was born in the Barmen part of Wuppertal, Rhine Province, as the third of five children.

As a schoolboy, Rau was active in the Confessing Church, a circle of the German Protestant Church which actively resisted Nazism.

Rau was a member of the All-German People ’ s Party ( GVP ), which was founded by Gustav Heinemann.

In 1958, Rau and his political mentor, Gustav Heinemann, joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany ( SPD ), where he was active in the Wuppertal chapter.

In 1958, Rau was elected for the first time as member of the Landtag ( state parliament ) of North Rhine-Westphalia ( NRW ).

In 1998 Rau stepped down from his positions as SPD Chairman and Minister President, and on 23 May 1999, was elected Federal President by the Federal Assembly of Germany to succeed Roman Herzog ( CDU ).

As all Federal Presidents but his mentor Heinemann, who had not wished to be seen off in this manner, Rau was honored by a Großer Zapfenstreich which on his wish included the hymn " Jesus bleibet meine Freude " ( Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring ).

In 2000, Rau was the first German head of state since the Holocaust to address the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, in German.

The maxim of Rau was “ to reconcile, not divide ”.

Rau was awarded fifteen honorary doctorates.

Since 1995 Rau was aware of his dangerous aneurysm in the abdominal aorta, but declined an operation out of respect for his office and the upcoming election as president.

Fraser claimed that the way the Howard government handled the David Hicks, Cornelia Rau and Vivian Solon cases was questionable.

After the very close relationship between the quagga and surviving zebras was discovered, the Quagga Project was started by Reinhold Rau ( 1932 – 2006 ) in South Africa to recreate the quagga by selective breeding from plains zebra stock, with the eventual aim of reintroducing them to the wild.

The SPD's candidate for chancellor was the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau.

It was named for an important chief, Kau Rau Maw Nee ( Walking Turtle ).

One key factor in developing the popularity of the music in the UK and across Europe in the early 1960s was the success of the American Folk Blues Festival tours, organised by German promoters Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau.

He was also popular with the nickname ' Rau ' ( in Marathi ' र ा ऊ ').

At some stage he was joined by Kereopa Te Rau, the infamous eyeball-eater from the Volkner Incident, and between them they mustered about 110 supporters.

The constitutional advisor was Sir Benegal Narsing Rau ( who became First Indian Judge in International Court of Justice, 1950 – 54 ).

With the Buyi, Tay – Nùng, and other northern Tai speakers, they are sometimes known as the Rau or Rao.

By the end of September 2004, DIMIA officials were planning to move Rau to the Baxter Immigration Reception and Processing Centre ( commonly known as the Baxter Detention Centre ), a DIMIA facility ( operated by Global Solutions Limited, or GSL ) near the town of Port Augusta in South Australia.

Instead, Rau was sent to the Management Unit, known simply as Management, which the Baxter psychologist had specifically warned was not a suitable long-term solution.

In 1987, Rau tried to become chancellor of Germany for the SPD, but his refusal to contemplate forming a coalition with the Green Party meant he could not win the elections against Helmut Kohl ’ s Christian Democrats ( CDU ).

In December of the same year, the prominent deputy Fernand Rau defected from the Christian Social People's Party after the CSV broke its pledge to make him European Commissioner, increasing the ADR's representation back up to four.

On several occasions, she disappeared for a few days, and sometimes she travelled overseas, but she had always returned or made contact with her family, usually with her sister, Chris Rau.

South Australia's current Planning Minister, John Rau said that the Government should not have approved the rezoning of land without the government and council being able to support that community with infrastructure.

On 8 December 2011 Attorney-General John Rau closed the McGee case after Crown legal advice suggested the Conduct Board's decision could not be challenged.

It is referred to locally in the Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky area as the " Lazarus lizard ", as it was introduced to the area around 1950 by George Rau, a boy who was a member of the family who owned the Lazarus department store chain ( now absorbed into Macy's ).

The following day, Manly Hospital reported Rau to the New South Wales Police as a " missing patient ", although they did not consider her to be in any serious danger.
