Services from London Bridge to Tunbridge Wells via Redhill were operated by Southeastern until December 2008, when they were transferred to Southern and curtailed at Tonbridge.

Previously, trains between London and Tunbridge Wells had taken a circuitous route via Redhill.

It is a junction between two important commuter routes ; the South Eastern Main Line serving Ashford, Ramsgate and Dover and the Hastings Main Line serving Tunbridge Wells and Hastings, as well as a branch to Redhill.

At Tonbridge services from the original main route – now the rural Redhill to Tonbridge Line line – join from Redhill, while the main line to Hastings via Tunbridge Wells diverges.

It rises in Redhill, near Kings Norton, and also at Hob Hill, near Wythall ; South of Birmingham.

In 1987, it was redefined to consist of the part of the City of Hamilton lying within the following limits: commencing at the intersection of the easterly limit of the said city with Queenston Road ; thence westerly along Queenston Road to Redhill Creek ; thence southwesterly along Redhill Creek to the brow of the Niagara Escarpment ; thence northerly and westerly along said brow to the southerly production of Sherman Avenue ; thence northerly along said production to and along Sherman Avenue to Cannon Street ; thence westerly along Cannon Street to Wentworth Street ; thence northerly along Wentworth Street and its northerly production to the northerly limit of the City of Hamilton ; thence easterly and southerly along the northerly and easterly limits of said city to the point of commencement.

In 1829 Rennie was commissioned to survey two possible railway routes: one via Dorking and Horsham and Shoreham ; the other more direct route was via Redhill and Haywards Heath, but the scheme was abandoned due to lack of support in Parliament.

Even so, it required substantial earthworks, notably at Merstham, with one of the largest cuttings in Britain ; seven tunnels ( Merstham, Quarry, Redhill, Balcombe, Haywards Heath, Patcham and Clayton ); and several embankments.

The line from Reading to was built by the Reading, Guildford and Reigate Railway ( RG & RR ), and was opened in stages: the first sections, from Reading to Farnborough, which included a station at Wokingham, also from Dorking to Redhill, were opened on 4 July 1849 ; other sections followed, with the last section, from Guildford to, on 15 October 1849.

It provides an interchange station for three other railway lines: the North Downs Line northwards towards Reading, and with connection to Aldershot ; the same line eastwards to Redhill ; the New Guildford Line, the alternative route to Waterloo, via Cobham or Epsom.

In World War II, after the Vickers-Armstrongs aircraft factory at Brooklands was badly bombed by the Luftwaffe on 4 September 1940, with heavy loss of life and many more injured, the Vickers Experimental Department was quickly dispersed to secret premises on the Silvermere and Foxwarren Park estates along Redhill Road.

After the war, Vickers ' Experimental Department continued to use two of the Redhill Road sites ( now known as ' Foxwarren ') and built new aircraft prototypes there such as the Viscount airliner and Valiant V-bomber, until it moved back to the main factory at Brooklands in the late 1950s.

From 1972-2011, the Cobham Bus Museum occupied a war-time aircraft hangar ( used mainly by Vickers-Armstrongs as a machine shop ) next to Silvermere golf course in Redhill Road.

Painshill Park is nearby and Silvermere golf course is located in Redhill Road on the North side of the A3.

The Earlswood Brook, a tributary draining the urban areas to the south of Reigate and Redhill, joins the Mole at Sidlow.

In July 1997, fans arranged the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the success of " A Whiter Shade of Pale ", and invited the then inactive band to play a concert at Redhill.

Immediately following this was Redhill Tunnel, provided with elegant castellated portals to placate the local landowner.
