* Rhododendron macrophyllum – Pacific Coast Rhododendron

Shrub associates in the central and northern part of Coast Douglas-fir's range include Vine Maple ( Acer circinatum ), Salal ( Gaultheria shallon ), Pacific Rhododendron ( Rhododendron macrophyllum ), Oregon-grape ( Mahonia aquifolium ), Red huckleberry ( Vaccinium parvifolium ), and Salmonberry ( Rubus spectabilis ).

It was once protected by law in the province ( in an act which also protected Rhododendron macrophyllum and Trillium ovatum ), but this was repealed in 2002.

Rhododendron catawbiense, the most widespread rhododendron of the Appalachian Mountains, is the state flower of West Virginia, and is in the Flag of West Virginia.

The Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival is held each summer at the lower elevation of Roan Mountain State Park, offering visitors opportunities to sample traditional foods, purchase locally handmade crafts, and listen to a variety of traditional Southern Appalachian musicians, as well as to view the alpine catawba rhododendron gardens whose blooming season usually peaks during the third or fourth weekend in June.

Other notable species include the Mountain Aspen Acronychia chooreechillum, Trochocarpa bellendenkerensis, Polyscias bellendenkerensis, the vine Parsonsia bartlensis and Australia's only native rhododendron, Rhododendron lochiae which grows on top of the large granite boulders or as an epiphyte in the cloud forest canopy.

These upper reaches have been extensively colonized by various Ericaceae ( heaths ): blueberry and cranberry ( Vaccinium ), huckleberry ( Gaylussacia ), rose azalea ( Rhododendron prinophyllum ) and rosebay rhododendron ( Rhododendron maximum ), mountain laurel ( Kalmia latifolia ), teaberry ( or wintergreen, Gaultheria ), and Allegheny menziesia ( Menziesia pilosa ).

), with rhododendron ( Rhododendron fastigiatum ) abundant in the understory.

One rhododendron ( Rhododendron wattii ) has been named after him.

It is also home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, and has over twenty-four species of the rhododendron, the state flower.

* The Helen S. Layer Rhododendron Garden contains heaths and vernal witch-hazels in March, through to the fall heathers and native witch-hazels in October and November, with over 1, 200 rhododendron plants and over 100 mountain laurel plants.

The flowers of some rhododendrons can appear similar to those of some hydrangeas, but Rhododendron ( including azalea ) is in a different order.

Much of the area is however becoming invaded by the alien plant, Rhododendron ponticum which provides a covering of pink blossom in May and June, but which is slowly blanketing out the native flora.

Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, USA, is a state park located on and around Little Monadnock Mountain, containing a stand of native Rhododendron maximum, the largest of nineteen similar stands in central and northern New England, the northern limit of their growing range.

There are over 28, 000 cultivars of Rhododendron in the International Rhododendron Registry held by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Recent genetic investigations have caused an ongoing realignment of species and groups within the genus, and also have caused the old genus Ledum to be reclassified within subgenus Rhododendron.

Species of the genus Rhododendron are native to every continent of the world, except South America and Africa.

Some species ( e. g. Rhododendron ponticum in Ireland and the United Kingdom ) are invasive as introduced plants, spreading in woodland areas replacing the natural understory.
