In 1171 Rhys made peace with King Henry and was confirmed in possession of his recent conquests as well as being named Justiciar of South Wales.

Rhys made plans to resist, but was persuaded by his council to meet the king to discuss peace terms.

There was some fighting in Meirionnydd the following year, but Rhys apparently made no serious attempt to annex it.

Owain Gwynedd's death led to the splitting of Gwynedd between his sons, while Rhys made Deheubarth dominant in Wales for a time.

Through the Tudors inter-marrying with the House of Stuart Rhys is an ancestor to the current ruling house of the United Kingdom and also an ancestor of several ruling houses in Europe.
