Rhys ap Gruffydd or ap Gruffudd ( Anglicised to " Griffith ") ( 1132 – 28 April 1197 ) was the ruler of the kingdom of Deheubarth in south Wales.

Rhys's grandfather, Rhys ap Tewdwr, was king of Deheubarth, and was killed at Brecon in 1093 by Bernard de Neufmarche.

Rhys became ruler of Deheubarth in 1155.

Henry invaded Deheubarth in 1163, stripped Rhys of all his lands and took him prisoner.

Rhys was the second son of Gruffydd ap Rhys, ruler of part of Deheubarth, and Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd, daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan, king of Gwynedd.

Deheubarth was one of the traditional kingdoms of Wales, shown here as they were in 1093 when Rhys ap Tewdwr died.

His grandfather, Rhys ap Tewdwr, had been king of all Deheubarth until his death in 1093.

Maredudd died in 1155 at the age of twenty-five and left Rhys as ruler of Deheubarth.

Shortly after becoming ruler of Deheubarth, Rhys heard rumours that Owain Gwynedd was planning to invade Ceredigion in order to reclaim it for Gwynedd.

Rhys had other reasons for rebellion, for he had returned to Deheubarth from England to find that the neighbouring Norman lords were threatening Cantref Mawr.

Rhys returned to Deheubarth where he captured and burned Cardigan Castle.

Henry and Rhys met once more at Laugharne as Henry returned from Ireland in 1172, and shortly afterwards Henry appointed Rhys " justice on his behalf in all Deheubarth ".

By 1196 Rhys ruled almost all of Deheubarth, as well as controlling much of the remainder of south Wales through client princes.

In 1216 Llywelyn the Great of Gwynedd held a council at Aberdyfi where he allocated parts of Deheubarth to several sons and grandsons of Rhys.

Rhys eventually became the main power in Deheubarth, but never ruled more than a portion of his father's realm and was a client prince of Llywelyn the Great of Gwynedd.

Rhys ap Tewdwr of Deheubarth was killed in 1093 in Brycheiniog, and his kingdom was seized and divided between various Norman lordships.

His son, Owain Gwynedd, allied with Gruffydd ap Rhys of Deheubarth won a crushing victory over the Normans at the Battle of Crug Mawr in 1136 and annexed Ceredigion.

In the south, Gruffydd ap Rhys was killed in 1137, but his four sons, who all ruled Deheubarth in turn, were eventually able to win back most of their grandfather's kingdom from the Normans.

Owain Gwynedd's death led to the splitting of Gwynedd between his sons, while Rhys made Deheubarth dominant in Wales for a time.

Since the death of Owain Gwynedd in 1170, Rhys ap Gruffydd had made the southern kingdom of Deheubarth the strongest of the Welsh kingdoms, and had established himself as the leader of Pura Wallia.

It also starred Paul Rhys, Miranda Richardson, James Fleet, Tamsin Greig, Fenella Woolgar, Adrian Scarborough and Mark Benton among others.

The commander and head of the NZDF is the Chief of Defence Force ( CDF ), Lieutenant-General Rhys Jones, who also acts as the primary military adviser to the Minister of Defence.

Maredudd and Rhys also destroyed the castles at Tenby and Aberafan that year.

Rhys had also annexed the Norman lordships of Cydweli and Carnwyllion in 1190.

Another contemporary writer also wrote of Rhys if Roger Turvey is correct in stating that Walter Map's piece Of the King Appollonides deals with Rhys under a pseudonym.

Through the Tudors inter-marrying with the House of Stuart Rhys is an ancestor to the current ruling house of the United Kingdom and also an ancestor of several ruling houses in Europe.

He also recorded Ess's band Y Pants for their debut release on 99 Records and performed with Rhys Chatham's Guitar Trio in 1977, a noise music experience that was very important in the development of his compositional voice ( Branca 1979 ).

William's eldest daughter Matilda ( also called Maud ) married a prominent Welsh prince, Gruffydd ap Rhys II of Deheubarth.

The First World War Flying Ace Arthur Rhys Davids also played, representing College with Ralph Dominic Gamble in 1915.

His daughter, Gwenllian, who married Gruffudd ap Rhys of Deheubarth, son of his old ally Rhys ap Tewdwr, is also notable for her resistance to English rule.

The blockbuster soap opera also stars familiar actresses, Calista Flockhart and Rachel Griffiths, in the roles of Nora's adult daughters, Kitty and Sarah, respectively ; Welsh actor Matthew Rhys played Nora's son Kevin and Dave Annable her youngest son, Justin.

This was also made into a film, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Rhys Chatham as well as Glenn Branca blended the minimal music with modern rock esthetics and began writing microtonal pieces for large orchestras of guitarists but also wrote other classical pieces with non amplified instruments.

For example: several skits from the cult 1960s TV show At Last the 1948 Show were resuscitated by John Cleese ( one of that show's creators ) and performed by him with various Amnesty show cast members, including fellow Pythons ( Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Graham Chapman ) and other peers ( John Bird, John Fortune and Tim Brooke-Taylor ( the last also an At Last the 1948 Show writer / star ), younger performers ( Rowan Atkinson and Griff Rhys Jones ), and Cleese's then wife, actress / writer Connie Booth.

Rhys Lewis, music critic for the Herald, wrote that he was " stupefied " by the government's choice, which he said was not only unoriginal, but also so associated with supranational brotherhood that it risked making internationally isolated Rhodesia the subject of ridicule.

Gruffudd started his acting career at the age of 13 in a Welsh television film called Austin ( 1986 ) and then later moved on to the Welsh language soap opera Pobol y Cwm ( People of the Valley ) from 1987 to 1994. He also played football with the Pobol y Cwm football team Cwmderi FC alongside co-stars Hywel Emrys, Gwyn Elfyn and Ieuan Rhys.

Tarbuck then appeared as Angie in the 1988 Falklands War drama Tumbledown, which also starred Colin Firth, Paul Rhys and David Calder.

The film also stars Rhys Wakefield and James D ' Arcy and her Harry Potter co-star Freddie Stroma.

Jean Rhys is also well-known for her novel Wide Sargasso Sea, which was set in Jamaica.
