* Holger K. Nielsen former leader of the Socialist People's Party, was born in Ribe and graduated from Ribe Katedralskole in 1969.

The town of Ribe has a long history as a center of education, namely the Gymnasium ( High School ) called Ribe Katedralskole ( cathedral school ) has its roots in the Latin School of Ribe, dating back to at least 1145.

Ribe (), the oldest extant Danish town, is in southwest Jutland and has a population of 8, 187 ( 1 January 2012 ).

Holger Kirkholm Nielsen, known as Holger K. Nielsen for short, ( born 23 April 1950 in Ribe ) is a Danish politician, member of the Danish Folketinget parliament for the Socialist People's Party.

The decision made by the Assembly of Ribe on 4 August 1421 is of particular interest, since both the bishops of Ribe and Schleswig, the abbots from the monasteries of Ryd ( modern Glücksburg ) and Løgum as well as councillors from Flensburg, Aabenraa, Haderslev, and Ribe were all present.

The island is situated approximately 12 kilometers southwest of the ancient town of Ribe.

He is buried in Ribe Cathedral.

He is best known for improving and standardizing Danish coinage, and established mints at Ribe, Viborg, Lund, and Schleswig.

At age eleven or twelve years, he donated all the money he had and gave it to a poor Ribe family living in a squalid house, but on condition that they cleaned it.

On the final triumph of the Reformation Tausen was appointed bishop of Ribe ( 1542 ), an office he held for twenty years.

By 1 January 2007, the old Esbjerg municipality was, as the result of Kommunalreformen (" The Municipal Reform " of 2007 ), merged with the former Bramming and Ribe municipalities to form the new Esbjerg municipality.

The town has many well-preserved old buildings, Ribe Cathedral, and about 110 houses are under Heritage Protection.

Second, all the old rights granted upon the chapels and House of God in Schleswig, Ribe, and Haderslev were given by the kings of the Realm.

Only at the age of 46 did he manage to obtain a permanent job, as the organist at the cathedral in Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark, situated in southwest Jutland.

Having noticed similar scratchings in Scandinavia at the cathedrals in Ribe, Lund, and Trondheim, Jorn decided to study the phenomenon.

The southern Holstein region belonged to Francia and later to the Holy Roman Empire, it was however held as an Imperial fief by the Danish kings since the 1460 Treaty of Ribe.

On the west coast the Danish diocese of Ribe stopped about 5 km north of the present border.

This created a new cultural dividing line in the duchy because German was used for church services and teaching in the diocese of Schleswig and Danish was used in the diocese of Ribe and the archdeaconry of Haderslev.

Jacob Riis was the third of the 15 children ( one of whom, an orphaned niece, was fostered ) of Niels Edward Riis, a schoolteacher and occasional writer for the local Ribe newspaper, and Carolina Riis ( née Bendsine Lundholme ), a homemaker.

Riis returned to Ribe in 1868 at age 19.

He carried $ 40 donated by friends ( he had paid $ 50 for the passage himself ); a gold locket with a strand of Elisabeth's hair, presented by her mother ; and letters of introduction to the Danish Consul, Mr. Goodall ( later president of the American Bank Note Company ), a friend of the family since his rescue from a shipwreck at Ribe.

Born in Ribe, he financed his education by writing novels and he was awarded a gold medal in 1876 for an essay on fungi.

Until January 1, 2007, Blaabjerg was a municipality ( Danish, kommune ) in Ribe County on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark.

Formerly the municipality belonged to Ribe County.

Until 1 January 2007 Bramming was a municipality ( Danish, kommune ) in Ribe County on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark.

It was merged with the former Ribe and Esbjerg municipalities to form the new Esbjerg municipality.

Until January 1, 2007, Brørup was also a municipality ( Danish, kommune ) in Ribe County.

Until January 1, 2007, Grindsted municipality was a municipality ( Danish, kommune ) in Ribe County on the Jutland Peninsula in south-west Denmark.

When Ansgar the Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen, set out on the " Mission to bring Christianity to the North ", he made a request in 860, to the King of Denmark, that the first Scandinavian church be built in Ribe.

However the presence of a bishop, and thus a cathedral, in Ribe can only be confirmed from the year 948 AD.
