Like his father, Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare ( commonly known as Strongbow ) was a supporter of Stephen I of England-the last Norman king of England.
His brother Gilbert ( d. 1241 ), who became the 4th Earl, was a friend and ally of Richard, Earl of Cornwall.
The name is derived from the Savoy Theatre, which impresario Richard D ' Oyly Carte built to house the Gilbert and Sullivan pieces, and later, those by other composer librettist teams.
