Producer Richard D ' Oyly Carte brought Gilbert and Sullivan together and nurtured their collaboration.

After the Welsh victory at the battle of Llwchwr in January 1136 and the successful ambush of Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare in April, south Wales rose in rebellion, starting in east Glamorgan and rapidly spreading across the rest of south Wales during 1137.

They included Robert's uncle, Robert the archbishop of Rouen, who had originally opposed the duke, Osbern, a nephew of Gunnor the wife of Duke Richard I, and Count Gilbert of Brionne, a grandson of Richard I.

Sullivan and Gilbert and their producer Richard D ' Oyly Carte themselves call their joint works comic operas to distinguish this family-friendly fare from the risqué French operettas of the 1850s and 1860s.

In 1875, however, producer Richard D ' Oyly Carte reunited Gilbert and Sullivan to create a one-act piece, Trial by Jury, which became a surprise hit.

During the years when the Gilbert and Sullivan operas were being written, Richard D ' Oyly Carte also produced operas and plays by other writing teams, as well as other works to fill the Savoy Theatre in between new operas.

However, Gilbert, Sullivan, and their producer, Richard D ' Oyly Carte, failed in their efforts over the next decade to control the American performance copyrights over their operas.

In 1875, Richard D ' Oyly Carte, who was then managing the Royalty Theatre for Selina Dolaro, brought Gilbert and Sullivan together to write their second show, a one-act opera entitled Trial by Jury.

Like his father, Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare ( commonly known as Strongbow ) was a supporter of Stephen I of England-the last Norman king of England.

His brother Gilbert ( d. 1241 ), who became the 4th Earl, was a friend and ally of Richard, Earl of Cornwall.

The name is derived from the Savoy Theatre, which impresario Richard D ' Oyly Carte built to house the Gilbert and Sullivan pieces, and later, those by other composer – librettist teams.

Patience ( 1881 ) was the first opera to appear at the Savoy Theatre, and thus, in a strict sense, the first true " Savoy Opera ", although the term " Savoy Opera " has, for over a century, included the complete set of thirteen operas that Gilbert and Sullivan wrote for Richard D ' Oyly Carte:

During the years when the Gilbert and Sullivan (“ G & S ”) operas were being written, Richard D ' Oyly Carte produced operas by other composer – librettist teams, either as curtain raisers to the G & S pieces, or to fill the theatre when no G & S piece was available.

The first collaboration of Gilbert and Sullivan — the 1871 opera Thespis — was not a Savoy Opera under any of the definitions mentioned to this point, as Richard D ' Oyly Carte did not produce it, nor was it ever performed at the Savoy Theatre.

She also had three brothers, Walter II de Clifford, Richard and Gilbert.

The theatre opened on 10 October 1881 and was built by Richard D ' Oyly Carte on the site of the old Savoy Palace as a showcase for the popular series of comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, which became known as the Savoy Operas as a result.

In 1864 a fire burned everything except the stone walls and the Savoy Chapel, and the property sat empty until Richard D ' Oyly Carte bought it in 1880 to build the Savoy Theatre specifically for the production of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, of which he was the producer.
