Richard Henry Lee ( January 20, 1732June 19, 1794 ) was an American statesman from Virginia best known for the motion in the Second Continental Congress calling for the colonies ' independence from Great Britain.

He earned seven championships, which is tied for the most all time with Richard Petty.

He was the third driver in NASCAR history to win both the Rookie of the Year and Cup Series championship in his career, joining David Pearson and Richard Petty.

In 1994, Earnhardt achieved a feat that he himself had believed to be impossible – he scored his seventh Winston Cup championship, tying the legendary Richard Petty.

The family still resides in Petty's home town of Level Cross, North Carolina and operates Richard Petty Motorsports.

The Richard Petty Museum is in nearby Randleman, North Carolina.

It was called a " fast-back ", and because of this David Pearson was the series champion that year with Richard Petty dominating 1967, winning 27 of 48 races ( including 10 in a row ) in the boxier Plymouth Belvedere.
