Havildar Bhanbhagta Gurung VC ( Nepali: भ ं भ ा गत ा ग ु र ु ङ ; September 1921 – 1 March 2008 ), also known as Bhanbhakta Gurung, was a Nepalese recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, awarded for his actions while serving as a Rifleman with the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Gurkha Rifles in Burma during the Second World War.

Bhanbhagta Gurung was about 24 years old, and a Rifleman in the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Gurkha Rifles, British Indian Army when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC:

As the sniper was inflicting casualties on the section, Rifleman Bhanbhagta Gurung, being unable to fire from the lying position, stood up fully exposed to the heavy fire and calmly killed the enemy sniper with his rifle, thus saving his section from suffering further casualties.

" During his single-handed attacks on these four enemy fox-holes, Rifleman Bhanbhagta Gurung was subjected to almost continuous and point-blank Light Machine Gun fire from a bunker on the North tip of the objective.

Fox has written a book about his experiences in the military, Marine Rifleman: Forty-Three Years in the Corps ( ISBN 1-57488-425-5 ), and was featured on the 2003 PBS program American Valor.

He was best known for prosecuting mob figures, including fugitive Winter Hill Gang leader James " Whitey " Bulger and his partner, Stephen " The Rifleman " Flemmi.

On 21 November 1941 at Sidi Rezegh, Libya, at an airfield being attacked by Rifleman Beeley's company, progress was held up by short range fire.

Pun was 21 years old, and a Rifleman in the 3rd Battalion, 6th Gurkha Rifles, in the Indian Army during World War II when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 23 June 1944 at Mogaung, Burma, during an attack on the railway bridge, a section of one of the platoons was wiped out with the exception of Rifleman Tul Bahadur Pun, his section commander and one other.

He was 20 years old, and a Rifleman in the 1st Battalion, 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles, in the Indian Army during World War II when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 10 November 1944 at Monte San Bartolo, Italy, Rifleman Thaman Gurung was acting as one of two scouts to a fighting patrol.

Although the sky-line was devoid of cover and under accurate machine gun fire at close range, Rifleman Thaman Gurung immediately crossed it, firing on the German position with his Tommy gun, thus allowing the forward section to reach the summit, but due to heavy fire from the enemy machine guns, the platoon was ordered to withdraw.

Meanwhile, the leading section, which had remained behind to assist the withdrawal of the remainder of the platoon, was still on the summit, so Rifleman Thaman Gurung, shouting to the section to withdraw, seized a Bren gun and a number of magazines.

It was not until he had emptied two complete magazines, and the remaining section was well on its way to safety, that Rifleman Thaman Gurung was killed.

He was enrolled on 20 November 1942 and was a 22 years old Rifleman in the 1st Battalion of the 9th Gurkha Rifles, in the British-Indian Army during World War II when the following deed took place at the Battle of San Marino, for which he was awarded the VC.

The Distinguished International Shooter Badge ( center ) is awarded to civilian and military personal alike, as is the Distinguished Rifleman Badge ( left ) and the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge ( right ); however these two badges are hung from service unique attachment bars ( civilian attachment bars pictured above ).

For Coast Guardsman who have been awarded the bronze or silver Coast Guard Excellence-in-Competition Pistol Shot or Rifleman Badge by the CMP can wear a bronze or silver miniature replica of the M1911 or M14 attached to the U. S. Coast Guard Pistol or Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon respectively.

Thapa was a 26 year-old Rifleman in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles, British Indian Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Captain Michael Allmand and Rifleman Tulbahadur Pun were awarded the VC for their actions during the fighting around the Pin Hmi Road Bridge at Mogaung in Burma on 23 June 1944 while serving with the 3rd Battalion who were taking part Operation Thursday, which was the second Chindit expedition.

These included a Victoria Cross won by Sergeant A. J. Knight, making him the only Post Office Rifleman to win this honour.

Accordingly, in due course of time, the Gurkha was ushered into the Buckingham Palace, where, in a rare expression of royal prerogative, the King Emperor personally decorated Rifleman Kulbir Thapa with Britain's highest military honour, the Victoria Cross.

Rifleman Thaman Gurung of the 1st Battalion won the Victoria Cross while serving in Italy.

He also wrote scripts for other television series, including Trackdown, The Rifleman and The Greatest American Hero.

That Rifleman Plunkett and others were able to regularly hit targets at ranges considered to be beyond the rifle's effective range speaks for both their marksmanship and the capabilities of the rifle.
