In 1867 the Dual Monarchy was created ; Croatian autonomy was restored in 1868 with the Croatian – Hungarian Settlement which was comparatively favourable for the Croatians, but still problematic because of issues such as the unresolved status of Rijeka.

The A6 route between Rijeka and Zagreb was constructed as an expressway in spring 2004, and upgraded to a full motorway in October 2008, thus upgrading the Croatian section of the European route E65.

La Guardia served in the U. S. consulate in Rijeka during the period before World War I when the city was under Austro-Hungarian rule and was known under its Italian name Fiume.

The first working prototype of the modern self-propelled torpedo was created by a commission placed by Giovanni Luppis (), an Austrian naval officer from Fiume ( now called Rijeka ), a port city of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy ( modern Croatia ), and Robert Whitehead, an English engineer who was the manager of a town factory.

In both the Slovenian and Croatian portions of Istria, in Dalmatia as well as in the city of Rijeka, Italian refers to autochthonous speakers of Italian and various Italo-Dalmatian languages, natives in the region since before the inception of the Venetian Republic, and also to descendants of Italians that migrated to the area in the early-to-mid-20th Century when it was a part of Italy.

The line is intended to carry the increasing amount of goods that enter Europe, at the Croatian port of Rijeka and are then transported to destinations across central and eastern Europe.

Toll is charged on most Croatian motorways, and exceptions are the A11 motorway, Zagreb bypass and Rijeka bypass, as well as sections adjacent to border crossings ( except eastbound A3 ).

The largest seaport with the deepest channel to a port in the Adriatic is Port of Rijeka on the northern Croatian coast, followed by Ploče in southern Dalmatia.

Ferry services to Italian cities of Venice, Ancona, Pescara and Bari from around a dozen of Croatian sea ports, most notably Rovinj, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, Korčula and Dubrovnik, is available on a daily or weekly basis.

In Croatia ( Croatian Railways ) the train operates the premium brand services InterCity Nagibni ( ICN ) on the routes Zagreb – Osijek, Zagreb – Varaždin, Zagreb – Split, and Zagreb – Rijeka

Finally it should be added that in Zajc's and Kuhač's era, major halls for musical performances and concerts were built: in Zagreb the building of the Croatian Music Institute ( 1876, 1895 ) with a concert hall, and the building of the Croatian National Theatre ( 1895 ), including the theatre buildings in Rijeka ( 1885 ), Split ( 1893 ) and Osijek ( 1907 ) where, along with the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, drama, opera and ballet performances are still played today.

The Ugly Leaders released the first ever Croatian Hip-Hop album, and gained a strong following in and around Rijeka.

In 2007, the issue of an Italian stamp featuring the Croatian city of Rijeka caused a controversy.
