Minnie Julia Riperton ( November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979 ) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her vocal range of five-and-a-half octaves, and her 1975 single " Lovin ' You ".

While studying under Jeffery, Riperton sang operettas and show tunes, in preparation for a career in opera.
Sidney Barnes, a songwriter within the Chess organization, also joined, as did Judy Hauff and a Chess receptionist named Minnie Riperton, who would later be successful in her own solo career.
Riperton had a short successful solo career ( most notably the 1975 hit " Lovin ' You ") until breast cancer ended her life in 1979.
