In order to facilitate overland travel, the mission settlements were situated approximately 30 miles ( 48 kilometers ) apart, so that they were separated by one day's long ride on horseback along the 600-mile ( 966-kilometer ) long el Camino Real, Spanish for " the Royal Road ", though often referred to today as the King's Highway, and also known as the California Mission Trail.

The Canadian side of the range has a history that includes the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush of 1858 – 60 and its famous Cariboo Road, as well as the older Hudson's Bay Company Brigade Trail from the Canyon to the Interior, the Dewdney Trail, and older routes which connected east to the Similkameen and Okanagan valleys.

The Barlow Road was the first established land path for U. S. settlers through the Cascade Range in 1845, and formed the final overland link for the Oregon Trail ( previously, settlers had to raft down the treacherous rapids of the Columbia River ).

In turn, the success of the Lincoln Highway and the resulting economic boost to the governments, businesses and citizens along its route inspired the creation of many other named long-distance roads ( known as National Auto Trails ), such as the Yellowstone Trail, National Old Trails Road, Dixie Highway, Jefferson Highway, Bankhead Highway, Jackson Highway, Meridian Highway and Victory Highway.

Although the Sauk Trail ( Chicago Road ) passed through the southern part of the county, early settlement did not come primarily from eastern Michigan.
