The U. S. Joint Chiefs of Staff created the South Pacific theater, with Vice Admiral Robert L. Ghormley taking command on June 19, 1942, to direct the offensive in the Solomons.

Pacific Fleet commander Chester Nimitz had concluded that Vice Admiral Robert Ghormley had become dispirited and exhausted.

The unit was ordered created on 29 August 1942 but the order was superseded on 28 September 1942 by theater commander Admiral Robert L. Ghormley.

Second, on 18 October, Admiral Chester Nimitz — Allied Commander-in-Chief of Pacific Forces — replaced Vice Admiral Robert L. Ghormley with Vice Admiral William Halsey, Jr. as Commander, South Pacific Area: this position commanded Allied forces involved in the Solomon Islands campaign.

In the meantime, Major General Millard F. Harmon — commander of United States Army forces in the South Pacific — convinced Vice Admiral Robert L. Ghormley — overall commander of Allied forces in the South Pacific — that the Marines on Guadalcanal needed to be reinforced immediately if the Allies were to successfully defend the island from the next expected Japanese offensive.

Vice Admiral Robert Lee Ghormley ( 15 October 1883-21 June 1958 ) was an admiral in the United States Navy, serving as Commander, South Pacific Area, during the Second World War.

Vice Admiral Robert L. Ghormley died on 21 June 1958 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
