Under Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke, Warwick Castle's defences were enhanced from January to May 1642 in preparation for attack during the First English Civil War.

Robert Greville was a Parliamentarian, and on 7 August 1642 a Royalist force laid siege to the castle.

He married secondly Dorothy Greville, sister of Robert Greville 2nd Lord Brooke, by whom he had three sons and five daughters.

In 1631, the Earl of Warwick granted a patent to a company of investors headed by William Fiennes, 1st Viscount Saye and Sele and Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke.

The Countess of Mansfield survived her husband by 47 years, marrying the Honourable Robert Fulke Greville in 1797, and died in July 1843, aged 85.

In 1814 the Royal Dockyard was transferred to Pembroke Dock ; though, when Robert Fulke Greville inherited the estate in 1824, a commercial dock was started which became the home of a successful fishing industry.

Greville obtained from James I a grant of Warwick Castle, and in 1621 he was raised to the Peerage of England as Baron Brooke, of Beauchamps Court in the County of Warwick, with remainder to his second cousin ( once removed ), and adopted son, Robert Greville.

He was succeeded in the barony of Brooke according to the special remainder by Robert Greville, who became the second Baron.

He was the grandson of Robert Greville, younger son of Sir Fulke Greville ( d. 1569 ) and Elizabeth, 3rd Baroness Willoughby de Broke.

Sidney and Greville arranged to sail with Sir Francis Drake in 1585 in his expedition against the Spanish West Indies, but Elizabeth forbade Drake to take them with him, and also refused Greville's request to be allowed to join Robert Dudley's army in the Netherlands.

Lord Brooke left no natural heirs, and his senior ( Brooke ) barony passed to his cousin and adopted son, Robert Greville ( 1608 – 1643 ), who took the side of Parliament part in the English Civil War, and defeated the Royalists in a skirmish at Kineton in August 1642.

Robert was killed during the siege of Lichfield on 2 March 1643, having survived the elder Greville by only fifteen years.

The arms of Saybrook College are the quartering of the arms of William Fiennes, 1st Viscount Saye and Sele and of Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke, who were the early promoters of the Saybrook Colony, where Yale would later be founded.
