Much of John's later, negative reputation was established by two chroniclers writing after the king's death, Roger of Wendover and Matthew Paris.

The use of recorded evidence was combined with an increased scepticism about two of the most colourful chroniclers of John's reign, Roger of Wendover and Matthew Paris.

The contemporary, but unreliable chronicler, Roger of Wendover, recorded the events in his Flores Historiarum.

According to Roger of Wendover, William was present at Gisors in France in 1188 when Henry II of England and Philip II of France agreed to go on crusade: " Thereupon the king of the English first took the sign of the cross at the hands of the Archbishop of Rheims and William of Tyre, the latter of whom had been entrusted by our lord the pope with the office of legate in the affairs of the crusade in the western part of Europe.

In the 13th century, James of Vitry had access to a copy while he was bishop of Acre, and it was used by Guy of Bazoches, Matthew Paris, and Roger of Wendover in their own chronicles.

On one occasion, as related by Roger of Wendover, when King Henry met with papal prelates, he said, " If prelates knew how much I, in my reverence of God, am afraid of them and how unwilling I am to offend them, they would trample on me as on an old and worn-out shoe.

In the account cited in full below, Roger of Wendover says that Eric was killed by a certain Maccus – elsewhere a son of Olaf – together with his son Haeric ( Henricus or Haericus ) and brother Ragnald ( Reginaldus ).

Roger of Wendover, a chronicler of the time, wrote:

A variant of the Wandering Jew legend is recorded in the Flores Historiarum by Roger of Wendover around the year 1228.

Matthew Paris included this passage from Roger of Wendover in his own history ; and other Armenians appeared in 1252 at the Abbey of St Albans, repeating the same story, which was regarded there as a great proof of the truth of the Christian religion.

Writing in the 12th century, Roger of Wendover credits Godiva as the persuasive force behind this act.

This version is given in Flores Historiarum by Roger of Wendover ( died 1236 ), a somewhat gullible collector of anecdotes, who quoted from unnamed earlier writers.

After admission to the order in 1217, he inherited the mantle of Roger of Wendover, the abbey's official recorder of events, in 1236.
