After a whirlwind two-week romance in 1940, Niven married Primula Susan Rollo ( 18 February 1918, London – 21 May 1946, Beverly Hills, California ), the aristocratic daughter of a British lawyer.

Rollo May, a pioneer of existential psychotherapy in the United States, was deeply influenced by Rank ’ s post-Freudian lectures and writings and always considered Rank to be the most important precursor of existential therapy.

Shortly before his death, Rollo May wrote the foreword to Robert Kramer's edited collection of Rank ’ s American lectures.

He influenced notable figures in subsequent schools of psychotherapy such as Rollo May, Viktor Frankl, Abraham Maslow and Albert Ellis.

Influenced by the work of humanistic psychologists such as Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow and Rollo May and sometimes associated with the human potential movement,

May considered naming the reindeer " Rollo " and " Reginald " before deciding upon using the name " Rudolph.

The major theorists considered to have prepared the ground for Humanistic Psychology are Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers and Rollo May.

Among the earliest approaches we find the developmental theory of Abraham Maslow, emphazising a hierarchy of needs and motivations ; the existential psychology of Rollo May acknowledging human choice and the tragic aspects of human existence ; and the person-centered or client-centered therapy of Carl Rogers, which is centered on the client's capacity for self-direction and understanding of his or her own development.

One of the earliest criticisms of the field was issued by the Humanistic psychologist Rollo May, who disputed the conceptual foundations of transpersonal psychology.

Humanistic psychology was developed in the 1950s in reaction to both behaviorism and psychoanalysis, largely due to the person-centered therapy of Carl Rogers ( often referred to as Rogerian Therapy ) and existential psychology developed by Victor Frankl and Rollo May.

Rollo May, argued that logotherapy is, in essence, authoritarian.

Rollo May contended that if a patient could not find his own meaning, Frankl provided a goal for his patient.

" Rogerian " psychotherapy is identified as one of the major school groups, along with psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis ( most famously Sigmund Freud ), classical Adlerian psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and existential therapy ( such as that pioneered by Rollo May ).

Rollo ( c. 846 – c. 931 ), baptised Robert and so sometimes numbered Robert I to distinguish him from his descendants, was a Norse nobleman of Norwegian or Danish descent and founder and first ruler of the Viking principality in what soon became known as Normandy.
