* 1962 – Rondane National Park is established as Norway's first national park.

Norway is now preparing to apply for nomination as a World Heritage Site for areas with traces and traditions of reindeer hunting in Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, Reinheimen National Park and Rondane National Park in Central Sør-Norge ( Southern Norway ).

In 2003, Rondane National Park was enlarged and smaller areas of nature protection were opened or enlarged.

It is the site of the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, lies just north of Jotunheimen National Park and lies just west of Rondane National Park, so tourism and outdoor sports such as skiing are also important.

The Vågå municipality lies in a mountainous region just to the north of Norway's Jotunheimen National Park, west of Rondane National Park, and south of the Dovrefjell mountains.

Large parts of the very first national park in Norway, Rondane National Park is situated in the municipality of Sel and has its main entrances from the mountain villages of Høvringen and Mysuseter.

After nearly a decade of planning, Rondane was established as the first Norwegian National Park on 21 December 1962.

Norman Heitkøtter was president of the commission, and made it possible by Royal resolution to establish Rondane National Park.

A new national park, Dovre National Park, between Rondane and Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park was also opened.

It is located between Rondane, which lies to its southeast, and Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella on its northwest.

Kvam is located at the northern end of the Peer Gynt Road, which passes through high roads with excellent views of the Jotunheimen, Dovrefjell, and Rondane mountain.

Rondane contains a few small canyons which were created by the rapid ice melting, most prominently Jutulhogget and Vesle-Ula.

Probably the best-known work is Peer Gynt ( 1867 ), a play by Henrik Ibsen, which is partly set in Rondane:

North-east lies the massif Rondane, which areas became the first national park in Norway in 1962, and has several mountains over 2, 000 metres.

Rondane lies just to the east of Gudbrandsdal and two other mountain areas, Dovre and Jotunheimen are nearby.

The park lies between the two larger and older parks Rondane to the southeast and Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella to the north.

Following the expansion, it is now only approximately 1 kilometre from the northern border of Rondane to the southern border of Dovre National Park, and large sections of adjacent mountain areas are protected by the three parks.

It is estimated that approximately 2000 to 4000 reindeer live in Rondane and the nearby Dovre area.

Like Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella and Rondane, Dovre national park hosts wild Fennoscandian reindeer of Beringia origin.

Soon after, in 1955, community meetings were held in the municipalities close to Rondane, and a commission was founded.

Although Rondane was the first national park in Norway, many others followed.

Its opening was part of the larger expansion of Rondane, when Rondane National Park was enlarged and smaller areas of nature protection were opened or enlarged.

The landscapes of Rondane have inspired many Norwegian writers.

Peter Christen Asbjørnsen, writer and gatherer of Norwegian folk tales in the mid-19th century, collected many stories connected with Rondane, including Peer Gynt, the story that inspired Ibsen.

Together with the reindeer in Rondane National Park the last remaining population of wild Fennoscandian reindeer of Beringia origin ( other wild Norwegian reindeer are of European origin and have interbred with domesticated reindeer to a various extent ), wolverine, and various large birds as golden eagle and gyrfalcon can be seen, and also the recently ( 1930s ) imported ( and potentially dangerous ) musk oxen.

Otta makes a good base for day / 2 day trips into the Rondane National Park massif and northern parts of Jotunheimen Having a Hotel, a number of camping sites, and the so called " High mountain " hotels located near Mysusæter just on the south egde of the national park.

The mountain chain swings eastwards south of Trondheim, with ranges such as Dovrefjell and Rondane, and reaches to the border with Sweden, where they are mostly gently sloping plateaus.

The district stretches from the mountains of Rondane and in the east to Jotunheimen in the west.

That area comprises lowland parishes 200 m above sea-level and mountain parishes 800 m above sea-level, fertile soil in the main valley and barren summits in Rondane and Dovrefjell.

Generally, Rondane does not receive enough precipitation to generate persistent glaciers, but glacier-like heaps of snow can be found in the flat back valleys.

Large climate changes allowed reindeer to spread widely across Scandinavia, only to be forced back to a much smaller area — including the Rondane mountain area — only some hundreds of years later.
