In 1926, W. C. Gray of Firby built S. S. Firby in his West Hartlepool shipyard, after which it joined the Ropner Fleet, and indeed, in association with Ropner of Thorp Perrow.

The land was originally a private residence with large grounds but has since become the property of Stockton Borough Council after being purchased from Sir Robert Ropner.

In 1882 Matthew Fowler sold the estate to Robert Ropner, a shipping merchant and shipbuilder, who was High Sheriff of Durham in 1896 and who became a baronet in 1904.

Most notable is Ropner Park, a Victorian-style park, located on the outskirts of the town, near Hartburn village.

Preston Hall, once the home of Sir Robert Ropner, is situated within the grounds and is now a museum.

There is a large green belt section stretching from Birkdale Road, parallel with Marrick Road and Grinton Road, towards Ropner Park.

Numerous members, including Larry Csonka, Ray Flaherty, Joe Guyon, Pete Henry, Arnie Herber, Cal Hubbard, Don Maynard, Hugh McElhenny, and Jim Thorpe were at one time associated with the New York Giants, but they were inducted largely based on their careers with other teams.

One design team led by Stanley Thorpe produced a gas-powered rifle with a locking system based on the Sturmgewehr.

Within Formula One, two teams have had their base of operations in Banbury, the former Simtek team which competed in the 1994 and 1995 F1 World Championships was based on the Wildmere Industrial Estate, whilst the current Virgin Racing team has it's manufacturing and production facility sited on Thorpe Way Industrial Estate, utilising the building formerly owned by Ascari Cars, a luxury sports car manufacturer.

Approximately one month prior to the event, Thorpe formed a partnership with New York based record company Sm :) e Communications, later Profile Records, who provided additional funding.

It is voted on by the Jim Thorpe Association, an Oklahoma based organization.

Roderick Thorp, who wrote the novel Nothing Lasts Forever, upon which the first Die Hard film was based, receives credit for creating " certain original characters ", although his name is misspelled onscreen as " Roderick Thorpe.

The role of Melvin P. Thorpe, as played by Dom DeLuise, in the 1982 film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, is based on Zindler.

It is based in Poole, Dorset from where it manages a portfolio of brands and over 50 attractions including the Madame Tussauds waxworks, Legoland Parks, Sealife Centres, Gardaland in Italy, The Dungeons and the London Eye, Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, and Chessington World of Adventures.

* The poem " Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight ", written in 1867 by the American poet Rose Hartwick Thorpe, was also based on the legend of the Chertsey heroine Blanche Heriot.

One gang, from Richmond, was headed by Taylor and the ' two-up king ' Henry Stokes, while the other gang was based in Fitzroy and included Edward ' Ted ' Whiting, Henry ' Long Harry ' Slater and Frederick Thorpe.

When crusading television reporter Melvin P. Thorpe ( based on real-life Houston news personality Marvin Zindler ) decides to make the illegal activity an issue, political ramifications cause the place to be closed down.

Anglo next adapted three stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde and Wilkie Collins for the British Classics Illustrated imprint of publishers Thorpe and Porter, a company for which he also devised a number of 68-page hardback annuals based on television series The Avengers, Charles Rand, and Danger Man.

The coaster was such a success that it spawned a ' sequel ' coaster at its sister theme park Thorpe Park under the name of Nemesis Inferno and in 2012 Alton Towers opened Nemesis: Sub-Terra which is based on the original backstory of the rollercoaster.

Subsequently, the loco was based at Norwich Thorpe ( w / e 31 January 1959 ) and March ( June 1961 ) before spending the remainder of her career on the London Midland Region: Willesden ( 1A ) ( w / e 30 March 1963 ), Crewe North ( 5A ) ( w / e 25 May 1963 ), Crewe South ( 5B ) ( w / e 19 May 1965 ) and finally Newton Heath ( 9D ) ( w / e 5 March 1966 ) from where she was withdrawn w / e 28 May 1966,

* 2001 – Australian Ian Thorpe becomes the first swimmer to win six gold medals at a single World Championships.

* Nemesis ( roller coaster ), Europe's first inverted roller coaster opened in 1994 at Alton Towers, England-not to be confused with Nemesis Inferno, its sister roller coaster at Thorpe Park.

In March 2012, Thorpe digitally released the ' No Hits, No Jazz Collection ' and performed at Darwen Library Theatre with a live eight-piece band for his ' 50th Anniversary 1-Gig-Tour '.

Thorpe reportedly began his athletic career at Carlisle in 1907 when he walked past the track and beat all the school's high jumpers with an impromptu 5-ft 9-in jump still in street clothes.

With a total point score of 7, 476 points, Thorpe broke the previous record of 7, 385 points set in 1909, ( also set at Celtic Park ), by Martin Sheridan, the champion athlete of the Irish American Athletic Club.

" Jim Thorpe and His World-Famous Indians " barnstormed for at least two years ( 1927 – 28 ) in parts of New York and Pennsylvania as well as Marion, Ohio.

In 1913, Thorpe married Iva Miller, whom he had met at Carlisle.

Jack Thorpe died at 73 on February 22, 2011.

There is a popular assumption in the town that the statue of Britannia was supposed to face out to sea but now faces inland due to a mistake during construction, although it is thought she is meant to face Nelson's birthplace at Burnham Thorpe.

The 1951 film Jim Thorpe, All American, starring Burt Lancaster, was filmed on the campus of Bacone Indian College at Muskogee.

Graham Thorpe ( 1969 – ) England cricket captain, was born in Farnham and played at the Farnham cricket ground.
