The route southward of Exit 6A in Wall was also originally intended to extend to the Brielle Circle and terminate at Route 34, Route 35, and Route 70 but there are no plans to do so currently.

During the 1950s, as the New Jersey State Highway Department was drawing out plans for an extensive freeway system, freeways were proposed for Route 18 and nearby Route 35.

Route 18's freeway was to begin in Eatontown and head westward to Old Bridge along the former alignment of State Highway Route 18 prior to the 1953 renumbering, while Route 35 was to head northward from Seaside Heights to Long Branch.

This section opened between 1967 and 1972, but in that time, two portions of the Route 35 Freeway had been cancelled.

As a result, the portion of the Route 35 freeway that was opened was signed as part of 18 instead.

The road merges with Route 106 before crossing Route 152 at Wilkins Four Corners and entering Foxborough.

Near the east end of the county, at exit 8, U. S. Route 22 merges with I-78, running concurrently for the next.

The route comes to an interchange with the southern terminus of County Route 503 ( Washington Avenue ) and Paterson Plank Road, where Route 120 becomes a four-lane divided surface road that merges with Paterson Plank Road as it heads northwest along the border of Carlstadt to the northeast and East Rutherford to the southwest.

After bypassing downtown Sparta, Route 181 ends and merges onto Route 15.

After Route 15 leaves Sparta and enters Lafayette Township, it merges with Route 94.

Once it merges with U. S. Route 130 in Robbinsville Township, Route 33 has two lanes in each direction.

Nearby communities include Heeia and Kaneohe to the south along State Route 83 ( the Kahekili Highway ), and Kahaluu, with which it merges to the north.

Route 114, which follows the path of the old " Salem Turnpike ," passes through the center of town, and is crossed there by Route 62, which merges with Route 114 for a short, 0. 2 mile stretch there.

Route 208 has its southern terminus in Fair Lawn, and goes through the middle of the borough from the northwest to the southeast, where it eventually merges with Broadway to become Route 4 not far from Paramus.

Route 173 passes through the center and eventually merges briefly with both I-78 and U. S. 22 which also run through the center.

U. S. Route 411 merges with U. S. Route 70 in Carson Springs and the merged road enters Newport from the west, intersecting US-321 in downtown Newport.

After County Route 524, the highway continues to the northeast along the Route 130 parallel before the route merges back in with the southbound lanes, which is the designated northern terminus.

After Route 44 is the last interchange, with Cedar Swamp Road, before US 130 merges into I-295 for a concurrency.

In some cases, multiple factors may remove the economic basis for a community ; some former mining towns on U. S. Route 66 suffered both mine closures when the resources were depleted and loss of highway traffic as US 66 was diverted away from places like Oatman, Arizona onto a more direct path.

The Boston Post Road entered what is now Westchester County on Kingsbridge Road, and turned north on Third Avenue-Columbus Avenue ( Route 22 ), forking off onto Colonial Place.

The fork to the left onto Route 1A through Plainville center was an alternate route to Boston.

Just before leaving Manchester and entering Bolton, the post road breaks off Route 44 onto Middle Turnpike East ( the portion of Route 44 between Manchester and Bolton is known as " New Bolton Road ")

Before reaching Eastford, however, it takes a right onto Route 244 (" Brayman Hollow Road ") which headed directly to Pomfret.

Many local and regional relocations, often onto parallel superhighways, were made in the early days of US 1 ; this included the four-lane divided Route 25 in New Jersey, completed in 1932 with the opening of the Pulaski Skyway, and a bypass of Bangor involving the Waldo-Hancock Bridge, opened in 1931.

At that point, Route 18 designated onto the alignment.

By the time the 1927 New Jersey state highway renumbering had been implemented and in law, the route was re-designated as State Highway Route S-28, a prefixed spur of State Highway Route 28 in Middlesex, following Raritan Avenue and River Road through Piscataway and Highland Park, joining State Highway Route 27 on a concurrency into New Brunswick, and onto George Street in New Brunswick southward.

Upon leaving the downtown area, the route turns north onto Gaston Avenue and heads into residential areas again, with County Route 612 continuing east on Main Street.

The road encounters a mix of residences and businesses before intersecting Plainfield Avenue, where County Route 620 continues northeast on West Front Street and Route 28 turns to the southeast onto Plainfield Avenue.

The route intersects County Route 616 ( Linden Road ), forming a brief concurrency with that route until the county route turns north onto Galloping Hill Road.

It was realigned onto its current alignment between Brielle and Belmar in 1929 and saw a northward extension along U. S. Route 9 from South Amboy to Iselin in 1947.

Route 35 continues north through Bay Head, becoming Main Avenue, then enters Point Pleasant Beach, a beach resort with a boardwalk that is home to Jenkinson's Aquarium, where the route swings to the west and turns north onto another one-way pair with two lanes in each direction — the northbound direction following Cincinnati Avenue and the southbound direction following Richmond Avenue.

By the 1940s, Route 35 was designated onto its current alignment between Brielle and Belmar with the former alignment becoming a southern extension of Route 4N.

U. S. Route 9 was also moved off of Route 35 onto a newly completed alignment of Route 4 between Lakewood and South Amboy.

There are two smaller non-municipal libraries – the Chase Library on Route 28 in West Harwich at the Dennis town line, and the Harwich Port Library on Lower bank St. in Harwich Port.

The " Blue Route " services the West End and the Dockyard of Sandys, the " Orange Route " links to the Dockyard and St. George's, the " Green Route " travels to Rockaway of Southampton, and the " Pink Route " brings passengers to points in Paget and Warwick.

It is also one of only two parts of the Trans-Canada system in which the highway is officially designated as north-south, the other being Autoroute 85 / Route 185 from Autoroute 20 in Quebec to the New Brunswick border ( the Trans-Canada is otherwise designated as east-west from Nanaimo to St. John's, although there are significant north-south sections north of Hope BC, Sault Ste.

Following the designation of Route 2, from Edmundston, the highway follows the St. John River Valley, running south for to Woodstock ( paralleling the International Boundary ) and then east for another to pass through Fredericton.

The center of the city is the crossroads of Virginia State Route 7 ( W. Broad St ./ Leesburg Pike ) and U. S. Route 29 ( Washington St ./ Lee Highway ).

The county is traversed by Route 94, called the " Missouri Weinstrasse " because of the many vineyards from Marthasville east into St. Charles County.
