In 1978 Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus, later partners in Factory Records, assembled a band around the remnants of local punk rock band Fast Breeder: drummer Chris Joyce and guitarist Dave Rowbotham.

Based on his incorrect interpretation of experiments on the Bedford Level, Rowbotham published a 16-page pamphlet, called " Zetetic Astronomy ", which he later expanded into a 430-page book, Earth Not a Globe, expounding his views.

William John Owen Rowbotham MBE ( 14 March 1914 – 12 July 1999 ), better known as Bill Owen, was an English actor and songwriter.

A friend and mentor to many other Australian writers, Rowbotham also maintained extensive international connections, travelling frequently to the United States.

Combining a Marxist analysis with feminism, Rowbotham contends that capitalism not only systematically oppresses the working class, but also particularly oppresses women.

In Rowbotham ’ s view, women are doubly oppressed as they are forced to sell their labour in order to survive, but also forced to use their labour to support their husbands and children.

Rowbotham was the original member of The Durutti Column and shared the guitar role with Vini Reilly, being one of first musicians signed by the label ; he was killed by an axe murderer and his body found in his flat in Burnage.

In 2007 Rowbotham received the Patrick White Award ; the presentation was made 9 November 2007, in Brisbane.
