A number of well-known people were educated at Dumfries Academy, among them Henry Duncan, founder of the world's first commercial savings bank, Sir James Anderson, who captained the SS Great Eastern on the Transatlantic telegraph cable laying voyages in 1865 and 1866, James Matthew Barrie, author of Peter Pan, missionary Jane Haining, international diplomat Alexander Knox Helm, John Laurie, actor ( Private Fraser in Dad's Army ), artist Robin Philipson, singer John Hanson, Alex Graham, cartoonist best known for the Fred Basset series and Jock Wishart, who in 1998 set a new world record for circumnavigating the globe in a powered vessel.

The SS Robin, a 300-tonne steam-powered coaster which is part of the National Historic Fleet, Core Collection and the last of its type still in existence, was built at Orchard House Yard in 1890, and is currently moored a short distance away at West India Quay in London Docklands.

SS Robin is a 300-tonne steam coaster, a class of steamship licensed only for passage in coastal waters, the oldest complete example in the world, situated at the Royal Docks in London, England for restoration and later display from 2013.

SS Robin is 143 feet ( 44 m ) long, her beam is 23 feet ( 7. 0 m ), her depth is 12. 2 feet ( 3. 7 m ) and her tonnage ( distinct from weight ) is 366 gross register tons.

On the Lloyds register she is registered as TMS SS Robin – Tri Masted Schooner.

However, it appears that this classification is incorrect: SS Robin is a steam vessel and was unlikely to have been used as a sailing auxiliary.

SS Robin was built in 1890 by Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Ltd. of Orchard House Yard, Bow Creek.

SS Robin was towed to Scotland to have the engine, the boiler and the auxiliary machinery fitted by Gourlay Brothers of Dundee.

SS Robin was launched on 16 September 1890, and after being fitted out in East India Docks was towed to Dundee to have the engine and auxiliary machinery fitted.

In 1892 SS Robin was sold to Andrew Forrester Blackwater of Glasgow.

In 1900 SS Robin was sold and renamed the Maria ; for the next 75 years or so she had three different Spanish owners.

SS Robin was discovered by the Maritime Trust in 1972.

A new mooring was offered in 1991 at West India Quay where SS Robin stayed until 2008.

SS Robin is now listed on the core collection of the National Historic Ships register alongside Cutty Sark, HMS Belfast and Discovery.

In 2002 David and Nishani Kampfner bought SS Robin and founded the SS Robin Trust as a registered charity.

SS Robin operated as a learning centre and photojournalism gallery between 2003-07, with an extensive programme of talks, seminars and workshops designed to build bridges between communities.

Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Core Collection, the restoration of the superstructure of SS Robin began in March 2002.

Without this compensation, necessitated by the Crossrail construction proposals and negotiated at the House of Lords Select Committee during the hybrid Bill process, it appeared likely that SS Robin would have had to be scrapped.

The SS ideology and values of the organization were one of the main reasons why the SS was entrusted with the execution of many Nazi atrocities and war crimes of the Nazi state.

The 2nd SS was not engaged in Normandy until July, and then at Caen against the British and Canadians, one hundred miles east.

It became one of the most popular songs of the SS, together with the Horst Wessel song.

As reported by lower-ranking SS officers and soldiers, Franz, one of the commanding officers of the camp, wrote lyrics to a song which celebrated the Treblinka extermination camp.

Between 1933 and 1939, the SD was administered as an independent SS office, after which it was transferred to the authority of the Reich Main Security Office ( Reichssicherheitshauptamt, or RSHA ), as one of its seven departments / offices.

The SD was one of the oldest security organizations of the SS and was first formed in 1931 as the Ic-Dienst, operating out of a single apartment and reporting directly to Heinrich Himmler.

Those pardoned included people with six-month sentences, 35, 000 people with sentences of up to one year and include more than 3, 000 functionaries of the SA, the SS, and the Nazi Party who participated in dragging victims to jails and camps ; 20, 000 other Nazis sentenced for " deeds against life " ( presumably murder ); 30, 000 sentenced for causing bodily injury, and 5, 200 who committed " crimes and misdemeanors in office.

When the Buchenwald camp was evacuated, the SS sent the male prisoners to other camps, and the five-hundred remaining women ( including one of the secret annexe members who lived with Anne Frank, " Mrs. van Daan ", real name Auguste van Pels ) were taken by train and on foot to the Theresienstadt concentration camp and ghetto in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

Because the female prisoner population at Buchenwald was comparatively small, the SS only trained female overseers at the camp and " assigned " them to one of the female subcamps.

This most likely saved Speer from arrest by the SS in addition to Speer being one of Hitler's closest and most trusted friends.

Other victims of German atrocities included 23 Polish children murdered between December 1944 and February 1945, and 24 people ( 23 men and one woman ) murdered by the SS on 7 March 1945, just before the Red Army took over the city without any serious resistance on 8 March 1945.
