The B202 was still being produced in 1993, but for the new generation Saab 900 being released in 1994 a new 2. 0L engine was required.

* Triumph Slant-4 engine-the first mass-produced multi-valve engine for Triumph and an early turbo engine for Saab.

An early example of this is in turbo charged Saab H engines, where a system called Automatic Performance Control was used to reduce boost pressure if it caused the engine to knock.

Cars such as the Nissan Skyline, Saab, Volvo 200 Series Turbo, Volvo 700 Series ( and 900 series ) turbo, Dodge SRT-4, 1st gen Mazda MX-6, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Chevrolet Cobalt SS all use front mounted intercooler ( s ) mounted near the front bumper, in line with the car's radiator.

The car was fitted with the standard Saab grille for the period, but did not feature the miniature " turbo emblem.

The Saab 99 turbo was one of the first " family cars " to be fitted with a turbo after the 1962-63 Oldsmobile Turbo Jetfire ; other contemporary turbocharged automobiles were very " specialised " vehicles and were difficult to drive.

In February 1991 Car Magazine tested the XM in V6 form alongside ten other executive cars ( Alfa Romeo 164 V6 Lusso, BMW 525i 24v, Ford Scorpio 2. 9 EFi, Jaguar XJ6 3. 2, Mercedes Benz 260E, Peugeot 605 3. 0 SVE, Rover Sterling, Saab 9000 CDs 2. 3 turbo, Vauxhall Senator CD 3. 0i and Volvo 960 3. 0i-24 ).

In 1985, producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer approached Scott to direct Top Gun on the strength of The Hunger, as well as a commercial he had done for Swedish automaker Saab in the early 1980s, where a Saab 900 turbo is shown racing a Saab 37 Viggen fighter jet.

Other popular engine swaps are a turbo Subaru engine into an older Porsche 914, or a turbocharged engine from a Saab 900 into a Saab 99 or BMW.

A typical leading ERC series car, Per Eklund's Saab 9-3 Turbo 16 4x4 technical specifications are a 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder 16-valve engine with a 45 mm turbo restrictor rated at + and of torque, four-wheel drive with programmable active differentials and six-speed gearbox, ( current FIA regulations ) and will do the 0 – 100 km / h ( about 0 – 62 mph ) sprint in less than 2. 5 seconds, thereby roughly as fast as a Formula One racer ( capable of 0-60 mph in 2. 3 seconds ), some other ERC Division 1 cars are already claimed by their drivers to need even less than 2 seconds.

The B204 engine was available with natural aspiration in 900, 9000 and 9-3 in the form of 2. 0i ( B204i ), with a low pressure turbo in the form of 9000 and 9-3 2. 0t ( B204E ) or Saab 900 and 9-3 2. 0T ( B204L ).

Automatic Performance Control ( APC ) was the first engine knock and boost control system that was introduced on turbo charged Saab H engines in 1982 and was fitted to all subsequent 900 Turbos through 1993 ( and 1994 convertibles ), as well as 9000 Turbos through 1989.

Depending on market, the NG900 was available with a choice of 2. 0 L or 2. 3 L Saab 16-valve DOHC engines ( Saab engine codes B204, B234 ) in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form ( 2. 0 L only ), as well as a 2. 5 L version of GM's European 54 ° V6 engine.

Saab introduced a 16-valve head to their 2. 0-liter ( 1985 cc ) straight-4 in 1984 and offered the engine with and without turbocharger ( 65. 5 kW / liter and 47. 9 kW / liter respectively ) in the Saab 900 and Saab 9000.

One exception is the experimental Saab Variable Compression engine ( SVC ).

This engine, designed by Saab Automobile, uses a technique that dynamically alters the volume of the combustion chamber ( V < sub > c </ sub >), which, via the above equation, changes the compression ratio ( CR ).

In 1968 Saab AB merged with the Swedish lorry, bus and heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturer Scania-Vabis, and became Saab-Scania AB.

The merger meant that Saab no longer had to import the British Triumph Slant-4 engine, and could instead use the engine production facilities of Scania.

In 1972 they started manufacturing the Saab B engine, and in 1977 Saab took advantage of Scania's experience with turbochargers and added one to the engine, thus creating one of the earliest turbocharged " family cars " with the Saab 99 Turbo, which has been listed by Popular Mechanics as the second best turbocharged car ever made.

This engine is also used in the Subaru Impreza WRX, as well as the re-badged Saab 9-2X.

The first Saab car got a similar air cooled two cylinder engine.

Wartburg, a GDR manufacturer of larger saloons, also used a DKW engine: a water-cooled 3 cylinder two-stroke unit, also found in later Saab cars until the late sixties.

Lotus ' powertrain department is responsible for the design and development of the 4-cylinder Ecotec engine found in many of GM's Vauxhall, Opel, Saab, Chevrolet and Saturn cars.

SAAB first used an inline-4 tilted at 45 degrees for the Saab 99, but later versions of the engine were less tilted.

In 1993, the " Aero " was introduced, and was the most powerful Saab to date upon its introduction.

This version of the Cavalier shared its mechanicals with the Saab 900 that was produced from 1993 until 1998, and continued until 2002 as the Saab 9-3.

He raced in Britain and Sweden in Formula Ford and Formula 3 ( he was Swedish junior Formula Ford Champion in 1986 ), in Europe in Formula Opel Lotus, in Scandinavia and Europe in the Renault Clio Cup ( Scandinavian Champion 1992 ) and in the USA in the Barber Saab Pro Series ( Champion in 1993 ).

Herta enjoyed considerable success in the lower formulae, winning the Barber Formula Ford and Barber Saab series championships, and dominating the 1993 Indy Lights championship with Tasman Motorsports.

In the 1980s convertibles such as the Chrysler LeBaron and Saab 900 revived the body style in the United States – followed by models such as the Mazda Miata, Porsche Boxster, Audi TT and later retractable hardtop models.

In the 1970s, the Rover SD1, Renault 30, and Saab 900 introduced the hatchback style into the executive car market.

Many other turbo-charged cars, particularly where the aesthetics of the car are not to be compromised by unattractive top mount scoops, such as the Toyota Supra ( JZA80 only ), Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, Nissan Silvia ( S13 / 14 / 14a / 15 ), Nissan 180sx, Mitsubishi 3000gt, Saab 900, Volkswagen, Fiat Multipla, Audi TT, and Turbo Mitsubishi Eclipse use side-mounted air-to-air intercoolers ( SMIC ), which are mounted in the front corner of the bumper or in front of one of the wheels.

The " classic " Saab 900 was based on the Saab 99 chassis, though with a longer front end to meet U. S. frontal crash regulations.

The Saab 900 was a front-engined, front-wheel-drive compact car with a longitudinally mounted, 45-degree slanted, L 4-cylinder engine, double wishbone front suspension and beam-axle rear suspension.

In similar fashion, Minis also had their gearbox mounted directly below the engine ; however, the Mini gearbox and engine shared the same oil, whereas the Saab 900 ( and 99 ) gearboxes contained a separate sump for engine oil.

The Saab 900 could be ordered with different options.

A 1989 Saab 900 SPG owned by Peter Gilbert of Wisconsin, was driven over a million miles, before being donated to The Wisconsin Automotive Museum.

By 1990, the Saab 900 no longer offered the mesh wheels.

The first cars were sold as the Saab 900 " Finlandia ".

The Enduro was a special version of the 1980 900 Turbo assembled by Saab Australia ; only eleven 900 Enduros were made along with a full body kit as a spare.
