Salisbury railway station serves the city, and is the crossing point between the West of England Main Line and the Wessex Main Line, making it a regional interchange.

Axminster railway station is on the West of England Main Line that runs from Exeter via Salisbury to London Waterloo.

Lord Salisbury, who was chairman of Great Eastern in 1870, described the Liverpool Street extension as " one of the greatest mistakes ever committed in connection with a railway.
