Arnold Palmer and Sam Snead will be among those honored at the national awards dinner of the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association tonight.

Sam Snead died in Hot Springs, Virginia, in 2002 following complications from a stroke, four days before his 90th birthday.

Palmer was convinced by his business partner Mark McCormack that success in the Open -– to emulate the feats of Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Sam Snead and Hogan before him –- would truly make him a global sporting star, not simply a leading American golfer.

It was decided in its very last match, of which United States Captain Sam Snead later said " This is the greatest golf match you have ever seen in England ".

" All the boys thought it was ridiculous to give him that putt ," said Sam Snead.

From 1981 – 1999, he joined Byron Nelson and Sam Snead in hitting a ceremonial tee shot before each Masters tournament.
