On September 12, 1943, Otto Skorzeny led a daring glider-based assault on the Gran Sasso Hotel, high in the Apennines mountains, and rescued Benito Mussolini from house arrest with very few shots being fired.

Teramo and L ' Aquila are the nearest cities to the Gran Sasso, while Assergi, at the base of the mountain, is the nearest village ; Rome is by road.

Construction of the tunnel included an underground particle physics laboratory at Assergi, the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso or Gran Sasso National Laboratory.

The majestic Gran Sasso rises at its peak, the Corno Grande, to an altitude of 2912 meters and is characterized by steep, and in places virtually inaccessible, gorges.

Just prior to that involvement, also at Kerry's request, Sasso had taken on a major role for the Democratic National Committee.
