Sauron also gave seven Rings of Power to the Dwarves.

Later in the Second Age, Sauron gave the Nine to powerful men, kings and sorcerers, including three from Númenor, all of whom fell swiftly under the rings ' domination.

Also in the Second Age Sauron gave the Seven to various Dwarf-lords ( though the Dwarves of Moria maintained a tradition that the ring given to Durin III came directly from the Elven smiths ).

The great deeds of Beren and Lúthien in defeating Sauron, overthrowing his fortress of Tol-in-Gaurhoth and wresting a Silmaril from Morgoth's Crown, as well as the military victories of Thingol on all the borders of his realm of Doriath, gave hope to the Noldor that Morgoth could still be defeated.

Yet he was the first of the Dúnedain to perceive the rising threat of Sauron, he gave needed aid to the Elven King Gil-galad and laid the foundation for the future alliance of the Elves and the Men of Númenor against Sauron.

According to Unfinished Tales, at the start of the War of the Elves and Sauron, Celebrimbor gave Narya together with the Ring Vilya to Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor.

The Rings gave power to the bearers, but were, in secret, designed to enslave the Bearer to a Master Ring: the One Ring which Sauron himself forged in the fires of Orodruin, the Mount Doom.

Seven of the Rings of Power forged by the Elven-Smiths were later given by Sauron, who had seized them, to the heads of the seven Dwarf clans ( although the Longbeards maintained that Durin's Ring was given him by Celebrimbor ).

Sauron's plan was not completely successful ; for the Elves hid their rings and did not use them while Sauron held the One, and the Dwarves ' rings did not respond to the One's control as Sauron expected.

Gollum and Frodo could only become invisible, while Gandalf and Galadriel mentioned that, if they wanted, they could use the " full " power of the Ring, becoming even more powerful than Sauron himself ( though they also mention that this in the end will corrupt them ).

The Númenóreans set up friendly relations with them, and declared them to be Middle Men, as opposed to the High Men ( the Edain ) or the Men of the Shadow, meaning those hostile to Númenor or in the service of Sauron.

However the parallel with Tolkien is inexact, as in The Lord of the Rings Sauron is unaware of the trio's approach until it is too late for him to stop them.

He is one of the Istari or Wizards who were sent by the angelic Valar to aid the Elves and Men of Middle-earth in their struggle against the Dark Lord Sauron.

The stone was also partially responsible for Saruman's fall from grace, as he was using it when he came upon Sauron, and was ensnared by him, though his transformation to one of the fallen Maiar had undoubtedly begun much earlier.

Sauron, although bereft of the shape in which he had wrought so great an evil that he could never appear fair in the eyes of men again, escaped from Númenor and returned to Middle-earth once more, taking up the one ring once again.

In, Thráin II, King of Durin's folk, the last bearer of one of the seven Rings of Power given to the Dwarves, was captured by Sauron's forces and was kept at Dol Guldur, where he yielded his ring to Sauron under torture.

The period in which he ruled was still a mostly peaceful one in Númenor, but in Middle-earth Sauron ruled the lands, and the shadow had fallen on Númenor as well.

After the end of the First Age, when the ancestral homes of the Broadbeams and Firebeards were ruined, many dwarves from these clans crossed Eriador and merged with Durin's Folk in Khazad-dûm, although remnants of these two western nations may well have survived as independent entities in the Ered Luin ; seven rings were given to ' the Dwarf Lords ' by Sauron in the Second Age, for example, and certainly the Blue Mountains remained permanently inhabited by dwarves of one clan or another throughout the history of Middle-earth: Thorin Oakenshield, for example, grew up there as an exile from his homeland Erebor, and several of his companions on his quest to reclaim that realm were not related to him ( Bifur, Bofur and Bombur ).

Here Gothmog's role is significantly expanded to the point that he is one of the film's main antagonists alongside the aforementioned Witch-king, Sauron, Denethor and Gollum.

In the Fantasy Flight board game " Middle-earth Quest ", he is one of five minions of Sauron.

Before the battle began, Sauron sent one of his servants, the Black Númenórean called the Mouth of Sauron, to speak with the Captains of the West.

Originally hired as one of several stunt performers for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, he ended up landing the part of the Dark Lord Sauron.
