The Coastal State Prison, a Georgia Department of Corrections state prison, is located in Savannah, near Garden City.

Camp Lawton — also referred to as Fort Lawton — was built in what is today Magnolia Springs State Park ; the location was favorable because the springs provided potable water and because of its proximity to the Augusta and Savannah Railroad.

The long delay in bringing a four-lane highway to Maryville even as most of the highway from Savannah south to the Arkansas line has been a four lanes for some time was a source of considerable irritation for Maryville and Northwest Missouri State University.

After the establishment of the Thirteen Colonies, Millen ( originally named " 79 " due to its approximate distance from Savannah ) was first settled in 1835 along the border of what was then Burke and Screven counties.

In 1857 the Savannah, Albany and Gulf Railroad Company ’ s line from Savannah, Georgia to Screven ( then known as Station Seven ) was completed when then trestle was built over the Altamaha River at Doctortown.

Post Office Department officials, realizing the need for faster mail service, had begun drawing up a contract to award to either the Plant System ( then known as the Savannah, Florida and Western ) or the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, both of which operated south of the ACL termination point of Charleston, South Carolina.

The Plant Road detoured over 30 miles from Savannah to Waycross then to Jacksonville.

It was named for the Modoc indigenous tribe of Northern California, some members of which had been captured after the Modoc War and sent, first to the Indian Territory ( now Oklahoma ) and then, a few, on to an area on the left ( east ) bank of the Savannah River in what was then Edgefield County, South Carolina.
