Schwyz ( Standard German ) is a canton in central Switzerland between the Alps in the south, Lake Lucerne to the west and Lake Zurich in the north, centered around and named after the town of Schwyz.

The name Schwyz is first attested in 972 as the village Suittes and is perhaps related to Old High German suedan " to burn ", referring to the area of forest that was burned and cleared to build.
