Note, however, that the fifth article did not completely deny perseverance of the saints ; Arminius, himself, said that " I never taught that a true believer can … fall away from the faith … yet I will not conceal, that there are passages of Scripture which seem to me to wear this aspect ; and those answers to them which I have been permitted to see, are not of such as kind as to approve themselves on all points to my understanding.

If the sick person wishes to receive the sacrament of penance, it is preferable that the priest make himself available for this during a previous visit ; but if the sick person must confess during the celebration of the sacrament of anointing, this confession replaces the penitential rite A passage of Scripture is read, and the priest may give a brief explanation of the reading, a short litany is said, and the priest lays his hands on the head of the sick person and then says a prayer of thanksgiving over the already blessed oil or, if necessary, blesses the oil himself.

She contended that this understanding was what enabled the biblical Jesus to heal and accords with the Scripture: " We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us ; he that is not of God heareth not us.

Christendom ; Sketched from History in the Light of Holy Scripture.

The classic formulation of Sola Scriptura regards " good and necessary consequence or deduction " from Scripture as authoritative and morally binding ; what these deductions might be is a frequent subject of controversy.

Chapter 1, Article 3 of the Confession reads: " The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the Canon of Scripture ; and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings.

Returning to Italy, the most celebrated doors are those of the Battistero di San Giovanni ( Florence ), which together with the door frames are all in bronze, the borders of the latter being perhaps the most remarkable: the modeling of the figures, birds and foliage of the south doorway, by Andrea Pisano ( 1330 ), and of the east doorway by Ghiberti ( 1425 – 1452 ), are of great beauty ; in the north door ( 1402 – 1424 ) Ghiberti adopted the same scheme of design for the paneling and figure subjects in them as Andrea Pisano, but in the east door the rectangular panels are all filled, with bas-reliefs, in which Scripture subjects are illustrated with innumerable figures, these being probably the gates of Paradise of which Michelangelo speaks.

Many of these churches reject the idea that anyone other than the authors of Scripture can directly lead other Christians by original divine authority ; after the New Testament, they assert, the doors of revelation were closed and councils can only give advice or guidance, but have no authority.

The earlier English writers tended to paraphrase biblical texts, particularly Psalms ; Isaac Watts followed this tradition, but is also credited as having written the first English hymn which was not a direct paraphrase of Scripture.

Thus, he cautiously states: " But knowing the sure number declared by Scripture, that is six hundred sixty and six, let them await, in the first place, the division of the kingdom into ten ; then, in the next place, when these kings are reigning, and beginning to set their affairs in order, and advance their kingdom, them learn to acknowledge that he who shall come claiming the kingdom for himself, and shall terrify those men of whom we have been speaking, have a name containing the aforesaid number, is truly the abomination of desolation.

: first, the belief in the omnisignificance of Scripture, in the meaningfulness of its every word, letter, even ( according to one famous report ) scribal flourish ; second, the claim of the essential unity of Scripture as the expression of the single divine will.

When Scripture says, ‘ The Lord rained fire from the Lord out of heaven ,’ the prophetic word indicates that there were two in number: One upon the earth, who, it says, descended to behold the cry of Sodom ; Another in heaven, who also is Lord of the Lord on earth, as He is Father and God ; the cause of His power and of His being Lord and God.

He also has collaborated with other scholars to produce comparisons of Judaism and Christianity, as in The Bible and Us: A Priest and A Rabbi Read Scripture Together ( New York 1990 ; translated into Spanish and Portuguese ).

Since the law must be in agreement with Scripture, knowledge of theology is necessary to the strengthening of the kingdom ; therefore the king has theologians in his entourage to stand at his side as he exercises power.

It is their duty to explain Scripture according to the rule of reason and in conformity with the witness of the saints ; also to proclaim the law of the king and to protect his welfare and that of his kingdom.

He demanded strict dialectical training as the means of distinguishing the true from the false, and asserted that logic ( or the syllogism ) furthered the knowledge of catholic verities ; ignorance of logic was the reason why men misunderstood Scripture, since men overlooked the connection – the distinction between idea and appearance.

The Eastern Orthodox churches do not accept this two-source theory ; rather, they hold that there is a single source of revelation, Holy Tradition, of which Scripture is the most important part.

Classical Anglicanism, therefore, like Orthodoxy, holds that Holy Tradition is the only safe guardian against perversion and innovation in the interpretation of Scripture ; in the famous words of Thomas Ken, Bishop of Bath and Wells: " As for my religion, I dye in the holy catholic and apostolic faith professed by the whole Church before the disunion of East and West, more particularly in the communion of the Church of England, as it stands distinguished from all Papal and Puritan innovations, and as it adheres to the doctrine of the Cross.

The Olney Hymns are subdivided into three books: Book I, On Select Texts of Scripture ; Book II, On occasional Subjects ; and, Book III, On the Progress and Changes of the Spiritual Life.

They are not directly listed in the Torah ; elsewhere, the Mishnah observes that " the laws of Shabbat [...] are like mountains hanging by a hair, for they are little Scripture but many laws ".
