Elliot McKay See, Jr. ( July 23, 1927 February 28, 1966 ), was an American astronaut, selected in the second group of astronauts.
According to chief astronaut Deke Slayton's autobiography, Slayton did not assign See to Gemini 8 because he did not consider him physically capable of performing an extra-vehicular activity.

The original prime crew for Gemini 9, Elliot See ( Command Pilot ) and Charles Bassett ( Pilot ), were both killed on February 28, 1966 ( less than four months before the mission ) when their T-38 crashed into the McDonnell building in St. Louis, Missouri where technicians were working on their Gemini spacecraft.
