The former was founded by Raimundo Irineu Serra in the early 1930s, as an esoteric Christian religion with shamanic tendencies.

He was appointed the second Presidente of the missions in California in 1785, replacing Junípero Serra, and transferred to the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo.

Santo Daime, sometimes called simply the ' Doctrine of Mestre Irineu ', is the name given to the religious practice begun in the 1920s in the far western Brazilian state ( then-territory ) of Acre by Raimundo Irineu Serra, an immigrant of Maranhao in Brazil's northeast region.
