This policy was a part ( some argue the foundation ) of what became known as the " Australian Settlement ' which promoted high wages, industrial development, government intervention in industry ( both as an owner-Australian governments traditionally owned banks and insurance companies and the railways and through policies designed to assist particular industries ) and decentralisation.

In 1801, David Murphy, a son of Reverend Murphy, cut the first tree that was felled in what was long known as Murphy Settlement.

In July 1831, Joseph Naper arrived at the west bank of the DuPage River with his family and friends to found what would be known as Naper's Settlement.

Part of the colonial era Isleño Barataria Settlement was in the southern part of what is now Estelle.

Miller's Settlement refers to an area that straddled Clayton and Gaines geographical township area along what is now Morrish Road.

When river frontage along Petit Cote was occupied, settlement began to extend toward Lake St. Clair, which became known as the Assumption Settlement.

This area became known as the New Settlement ( as compared to the Old Settlement of the towns of Amherstburg and Sandwich.
