As the Atlantic Ocean widened, the convergent-margin orogenies that had begun during the Jurassic continued in the North American Cordillera, as the Nevadan orogeny was followed by the Sevier and Laramide orogenies.

Emery County is bordered on the north by Carbon County ( which was created from Emery in l894 ), on the west by the Wasatch Plateau and the original settlements in Sanpete and Sevier counties from which most Emery County settlers came, on the south by the remote artificial boundary with Wayne County, and on the east by the Green River — the natural boundary with Grand County ( which was created from Emery county in l890 ).

It was named for the nearby Sevier River.

Much of the area was populated by newly immigrated Mormon converts from Scandinavian countries, and because of the growth in this small community they officially created Sevier County in early 1865.

In the mid-16th century, Spanish expeditions led by Hernando de Soto ( 1540 ) and Juan Pardo ( 1567 ) passed through what is now Sevier County, reporting that the region was part of the domain of Chiaha, a minor Muskogean chiefdom centered around a village located on a now-submerged island just upsteam from modern Douglas Dam.

Sevier County as it is known today was formed on September 18, 1794 from part of neighboring Jefferson County, and has retained its original boundaries ever since.

Sevier County was Tennessee's third fastest-growing county by percentage change in population between the 1990 census and 2000 census.

Except for the years 1887 to 1890, there was at least one member of the Sevier family in public office for the 122 years preceding 2005.

John Sevier was elected governor, and other executive offices were filled.

Like much of Sevier County, Emert's Cove was a Cherokee hunting ground before the arrival of Euro-American settlers.

In 1955, the Sevier County Board of Education purchased the Pittman School, and the school was combined with the Pi Beta Phi High School in Gatlinburg to form Gatlinburg-Pittman High School in 1963.

The Cherokee signed away all rights to what is now Sevier County in the 1785 Treaty of Dumplin, which was negotiated at Henry's Station.

Sevier County was created in 1794 and named after John Sevier.

Powell, along with a team of mapmakers and geologists, surveyed the Sevier and Virgin River area as part of a larger survey of the Colorado Plateaus.

In the Southeastern part of the United States, Mrs. Eugenia Duke of Greenville, South Carolina, founded the Duke Sandwich Company in 1917 to sell sandwiches to soldiers training at nearby Fort Sevier.

They include Snake Valley gray in the southwestern part of the Fremont region, Sevier gray in the central area, Great Salt Lake gray in the northwestern area, and Uinta and Emery gray in the northeast and southwestern regions.

Both Sevier and Johnson became part of The Family, interrelated men who dominated state politics and its national representation in the antebellum years.

John Sevier was born in Rockingham County, Virginia ( then part of Augusta County ), near what is now the town of New Market.

In 1969, as part of a series of changes to state routes, the portion north of Sevier Junction ( I-70 and US 89 near Joseph ) was transferred to other routes, removing the only part of State Route 11 that was signed with the state designation.

It is a part of the Sevier County Schools system.

Governed and operated by the Sevier County Board of Education, Pigeon Forge High School receives a part of the system's annual operating budget of $ 68, 353, 327, averaging an expenditure of $ 5, 212 per student annually.

The western part of Sevier National Forest was added on July 1, 1922, and all of Powell National Forest on October 1, 1944 .< ref >

At the southern entrance to the canyon the trace of the Eldorado thrust fault juxtaposes Proterozoic Belt Supergroup Greyson Shale over much younger Madison Limestone ; this faulting was part of the Sevier orogeny.

Most of the leaders of the Democratic party, Thomas Hart Benton, John C. Calhoun, Herschel V. Johnson, Lewis Cass, James Murray Mason of Virginia and Ambrose Hundley Sevier were opposed and the amendment was defeated 44 – 11.

James Sevier Conway ( December 9, 1798 – March 3, 1855 ) was a Democratic Governor of the State of Arkansas and the first elected governor of the state.

His younger brothers James Sevier Conway and Elias Nelson Conway also later became politicians in Arkansas after it became a state in 1836 ; they served as first and fifth governors of the state, respectively.
