Throughout most of the medieval and early-modern period it was known as Yasi or Shavgar and after the 16th-17th centuries as Turkistan or Hazrat, both of which names derive from the title ' Hazrat-i Turkistan ', which literally means " the Saint ( or Blessed One ) of Turkistan " and refers to Khoja Ahmad Yasavi, the Sufi Shaikh of Turkistan, who lived here during the 11th century CE and is buried in the town.

Many of his disciples achieved spiritual height, including Shaikh Nasiruddin Muhammad Chirag-e-Delhi, and Amir Khusro, noted scholar / musician, and the royal poet of the Delhi Sultanate.

Ingush peacefully converted to Islam in the beginning of the 19th century with the help of Shaikh Kunta-Khadzhi, a Chechen Islamic scholar.

Also in 1994, Shaikh helped found and became the first chairperson of the Muslim Community Broadcasting Trust which applied for and was awarded a community radio licence for Johannesburg.

In August 1997, the Muslim community radio station, The Voice, was launched-with Shaikh at its head.

He was born in a Muslim Rajput family to Shaikh Habibullah and Moqeema Khatoon.

The accusation was that, during the lecture, Shaikh said that Muhammad did not become a Muslim until the age of 40 ( the age at which he apparently received the first message from God ), and also that his's parents were non-Muslims because they died before Islam existed, and furthermore that he wed, at 25, without an Islamic marriage contract, and that he was unlikely to have been circumcised or to have shaved under his armpits or to have shaved his pubic hair, because those practices were unknown to his tribe.

Several Muslim League stalwarts including Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, Hamid Nasir Chattha, and Gohar Ayub Khan joined the breakaway faction while others including Shaikh Rasheed Ahmad and Ijaz-ul-Haq formed their own separate factions of Muslim League.
