Horace Porter, ( April 15, 1837 – May 29, 1921 ) was an American soldier and diplomat who served as a lieutenant colonel, ordnance officer and staff officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, personal secretary to General and President Ulysses S. Grant and to General William T. Sherman, vice president of the Pullman Palace Car Company and U. S. Ambassador to France from 1897 to 1905.

A son, Roger Sherman, Jr. ( 1768 – 1856 ), a 1787 graduate of Yale College served in the Connecticut General Assembly in 1810 – 1811.

Three grandsons, Roger Sherman Baldwin, George F. Hoar, and William M. Evarts served in the U. S. Senate.

At least four Union generals attended his funeral there: William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, Lew Wallace, and Irvin McDowell, and the latter two served among the pall bearers.

In 1879 this tree was named after American Civil War general, William Tecumseh Sherman, by naturalist James Wolverton, who had served as a lieutenant in the 9th Indiana Cavalry under Sherman.
