To reinforce this belief, the University of Nottingham in 2010 has begun the Nottingham Caves Survey with the goal " to increase the tourist potential of these sites ".

Continuously forested since the end of the Ice Age, Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve today encompasses 423 hectares, ( 1, 045 acres ) surrounding the village of Edwinstowe, the site of Thoresby Hall.

In 2002, a portion of Sherwood Forest was designated a National Nature Reserve by English Nature.

The River Idle, a tributary of the Trent, is formed in Sherwood Forest from the confluence of several minor streams.
