James Shooter ( born September 27, 1951 ) is an American writer, occasional fill-in artist, editor, and publisher for various comic books.

Shooter co-created the new Legionnaire Gazelle with artist Francis Manapul while on the title.

Soon thereafter, Shooter became the regular writer of the Legion stories, with Curt Swan, and later Win Mortimer, as artist.

In Adventure Comics # 346 ( July 1966 ), Jim Shooter, 14 years old at the time, wrote his first Legion story.

Shooter wrote the story in which Ferro Lad died – the first " real " death of a Legionnaire ( although Lightning Lad had been believed dead for a while before ) – and introduced many other enduring concepts, including the Fatal Five, Shadow Lass, the Dark Circle, Mordru, and the " Adult Legion ", a conjecture regarding what the Legionnaires would be like when they grew up.

For instance, one Legion of Super-Heroes story by Jim Shooter had a team of Legionnaires put into a variety of deathtraps and the villains wanted the heroes to successfully escape.

During his walk the following day, Mort is accosted by Shooter when he explains his story was published years before Shooter's existed.

Waid has stated that his comics work was heavily influenced by Adventure Comics # 369-370 ( 1968 ), the two-part Legion story by Jim Shooter and Mort Weisinger that introduced the villain Mordru: " It's a blueprint for everything I write.
