Herbert Alexander Simon ( June 15, 1916 – February 9, 2001 ) was an American political scientist, economist, sociologist, and psychologist, and professor — most notably at Carnegie Mellon University — whose research ranged across the fields of cognitive psychology, cognitive science, computer science, public administration, economics, management, philosophy of science, sociology, and political science.

Unlike many children, Simon was exposed to the idea that human behavior could be studied scientifically at a relatively young age due to the influence of his mother ’ s younger brother, Harold Merkel, who had studied economics at the University of Wisconsin – Madison under John R. Commons.

In 1933, Simon entered the University of Chicago, and following those early influences, he studied the social sciences and mathematics.

From 1939 to 1942, Simon acted as director of a research group at the University of California, Berkeley.

In 1949, Simon became a professor of administrations and chairman of the Department of Industrial Management at Carnegie Tech ( later to become Carnegie Mellon University ).
