Accounts note that Richard fought bravely and ably during this manoeuvre, unhorsing Sir John Cheney, a well-known jousting champion, killing Henry's standard bearer Sir William Brandon and coming within a sword's length of Henry himself before being finally surrounded by Sir William Stanley's men and killed.

* July 6 – Sir Thomas More, author of Utopia and one time Lord Chancellor of England, is executed for treason by King Henry VIII, after refusing to agree to Henry's decision to separate the English Church from the Roman Catholic Church.

After the death of Parr's second husband, Catherine began a relationship with Sir Thomas Seymour, the brother of the late queen Jane Seymour, but the King took a liking to her and she saw it as her duty to accept Henry's proposal over Seymour's.

Sir William Tailboys was captured and executed shortly after as he tried to flee north with £ 2000 of Henry's war chest.

The novel's final episode, which he dictated to his friend, doctor and neighbor Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from his bed appeared under the appropriate title, The Episode of the Dead Man Who Spoke in the Strand Magazine in 1900.
