Sir Elijah Impey ( June 13, 1732 – October 1, 1809 ) was a British judge, at one time chief justice of Bengal and MP for New Romney.

He was accused by Macaulay in the House of Commons of conspiring with Hastings to commit a judicial murder by having unjustly hanged Nandakumar ; but the whole question of the trial of Nuncomar was examined in detail by Sir James Fitzjames Stephen, who stated that " no man ever had, or could have, a fairer trial than Nuncomar, and Impey in particular behaved with absolute fairness and as much indulgence as was compatible with his duty.

Hastings, along with Sir Elijah Impey, the chief justice, was impeached by Parliament.

They were accused by Burke ( and later by Macaulay ) of committing judicial murder ; but Sir James Stephen, who examined the trial in detail, states that the indictment for forgery arose in the ordinary course, was not brought forward by Hastings, and that Impey conducted the trial with fairness and impartiality.

It houses exhibitions on the Tonn Press, the area's droving history and the nineteenth century geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchison whose work in the area resulted in the name of Llandovery being assigned to rocks of a certain age across the entire world.

This attempt to impeach Hastings was unsuccessful and Nandakumar was hanged in 1775 after being found guilty of forgery by Sir Elijah Impey, the Chief Justice of the newly established Supreme Court of India in Calcutta.

In describing the species, it is possible that he made of use of a painting in the collection of Lady Impey, wife of Sir Elijah Impey who was Chief Justice of court in Calcutta from 1774 to 1783.
