Born in 2332 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Benjamin is the son of Joseph Sisko, the chef and owner of the restaurant " Sisko's Creole Kitchen ," " Sisko's " for short.

Sisko is promoted to Captain on Stardate 48959 ( DS9, Season 3 Episode The Adversary ).

In 2369 Sisko is assigned to the Bajoran sector to command Deep Space Nine and to help Bajor's recovery from the recently-concluded Cardassian occupation, shepherding them toward possible membership in the United Federation of Planets.

Recognizing that the then-decrepit station is not an " ideal environment " in which to raise a son, Sisko contemplates resigning his commission.

They fight, and Dukat seems to be the winner, but in a last effort, Sisko throws himself and Dukat into the fiery abyss of the Bajoran Fire Caves, and Sisko is pulled into the Prophets ' plane of existence to live with and learn from them.

His wife, Jennifer ( Felecia M. Bell ), is killed during the battle, and Sisko carries the emotional weight of her death until the end of " Emissary.

While not as schooled in philosophy as Jean-Luc Picard, or scientifically geared as Kathryn Janeway, Sisko also highlights strength in engineering capacities ( as seen in " Explorers ", " The Visitor " and " Civil Defense ") having served before being posted on Deep Space Nine as the commander of the Federation Shipyards at Utopia Planitia on Mars.

Despite having to inform on his own people to follow orders, he delivers the information to Sisko.

He decided to pay Sisko a visit, but thought better of it when he saw Sisko and Keiko having a private discussion on the Promenade.

Sisko lost his wife, Jennifer, during the Borg attack and this forced Sisko to raise their young son, Jake, as a single parent.

Sisko continues to harbor deep resentment toward Picard for his role, however unwilling, in the death of his wife.

Sisko imparts a farewell to his new — and pregnant — wife, Kasidy Yates, informing her that although he does not know when he will be able to return to her, he will eventually return.

Sisko, in the meantime, finds that he has encountered entities in the wormhole who speak to him through images of his wife, friends, and crew members.

Sisko comes to the realization that he has been grieving over the loss of his wife and explains this to the aliens.

Sisko tries unsuccessfully to prevent him from his present course of action, but Seyetik is determined to set his wife free.

Later, Dax confides in Sisko that she knows she is in love with her former wife.

Sisko was first married to Jennifer, with whom he had a son, Jake.

Sisko looks into the Orb and finds himself reliving the moments when he met Jennifer for the first time.

Jake was born in 2355 to Jennifer Sisko, who was killed in 2367 during the Battle of Wolf 359, when Benjamin Sisko served aboard the USS Saratoga.

Not all " normal " characters have a Mirror counterpart ; because the Mirror versions of Ben and Jennifer Sisko separated before conceiving a child, there is no Mirror version of Jake Sisko.

The reverse is also true with Bareil Antos being alive in the Mirror Universe when his " normal universe " counterpart had died, and with Jennifer Sisko, who survived for many years after her " normal universe " counterpart died.
