The channel launched as BBC News 24 on 9 November 1997 at 17: 30 as part of the BBC's foray into digital domestic television channels, becoming the first competitor to Sky News, which had been running since 1989.

Sky News had had a free hand with domestic news for over eight years ( since 5 February 1989 ) and being owned by News International their papers were used to criticise the BBC for extending its news output.

Sky News objected to the breaking of its monopoly, complaining about the costs associated with running a channel that only a minority could view from the licence fee.

Sky News claimed that a number of British cable operators had been incentivised to carry News 24 ( which, as a licence-fee funded channel was made available to such operators for free ) in preference to the commercial Sky News.

However, in September 1999 the European Commission ruled against a complaint made by Sky News that the publicly funded channel was unfair and illegal under EU law.

The introduction of simulcasts of the main bulletins on the channel was to allow the news bulletins to pool resources rather than work against each other at key times in the face of competition particularly from Sky News.

The 2004 report claimed that the channel outperformed Sky News in both weekly and monthly reach in multichannel homes for the January 2004 period, and for the first time in two years moved ahead of Sky News in being perceived as the channel best for news.

A key claim made by Lord Lambert in his report had been that the channel was slower to react to breaking news compared with its main rival Sky News.

The Lambert Report into the channel's performance in 2002 called upon News 24 to develop a better brand of its own, to allow viewers to differentiate between itself and similar channels such as Sky News.

These are not marketed as a DBS service, but are received in approximately 12 million homes, as well as in any home using the Sky Deutschland commercial DBS system.

The fourth single, " Best I Ever Had ( Grey Sky Morning )", received moderate airplay.

Although Sky had received a modest amount of acclaim, including being produced by Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller, the band broke up without having any chart success.

Although his early 1970s jazz albums Red Clay, First Light, Straight Life, and Sky Dive were particularly well received and considered among his best work, the albums he recorded later in the decade were attacked by critics for their commercialism.

Amiga Format gave the game a score of 94 %, and praised its story, graphics, characters, puzzles and gameplay, saying: " Beneath A Steel Sky is a massive, intense and atmospheric adventure which will keep you on tenterhooks right until its final startling conclusion.

Amiga Power gave the game a score of 86 %, saying: " With as much care and attention taken on the storyline as the graphics, Steel Sky is an example of what an adventure game should be like – funny, enthralling and convincing.

Lemon Amiga gave the game a 9 out of 10, praising its story, graphics, music and controls, and said: " Beneath a Steel Sky has it all, and in spades-a challenging absorbing game with lots to see and do, and wonderful graphics and sound to boot.

Later games associated with the series include Sky Target ( which retained similar gameplay and presentation to the original, but with the addition of 3D graphics ) and Sega Strike Fighter ( an arcade flight combat game which featured free-roaming movement, boasting similar music but with an F / A-18 Hornet as the main plane ).

The channel scrapped its ". com TV " look, and on 1 July 2001, Sky Sports News launched another graphics change.

On 4 July 2011, Sky Sports News HD moved to a new studio and with that came a minor change to on-screen graphics and side graphics.

Sky television's acquisition of rights to broadcast live Premier League football from the start of the 1992 – 93 season saw them attempt innovations such as digital on-screen graphics ( DOG ) and Monday Night live games.

Since the pair left Sky in January 2011, the first half hour of analysis has been dropped, and for the remainder of the season the show was presented from the stadium in largely the same format as Sunday or midweek Premier League matches with a rotation of presenters and pundits, although the distinct " MNF " branding and graphics were retained.
