On December 7, 1917, all invited except Zhydelev and Vasilevsky gathered in the Smolny Institute to discuss the competence and structure of the commission to combat counterrevolution and sabotage.

There are three sharp turns: the Ivanov rapids, at Nevsky Forest Park of the Ust-Slavyanka region ( the so-called crooked knee ) and near the Smolny Institute, below the mouth of the river Ohta.

With the acquisition of power by the Bolsheviks, Dzerzhinsky eagerly assumed responsibility for making security arrangements at the Smolny Institute where the Bolsheviks had their headquarters.

The Smolny Institute (, Smol ' niy institut ) is a Palladian edifice in St Petersburg that has played a major part in the history of Russia.

The building was commissioned from Giacomo Quarenghi by the Society for Education of Noble Maidens and constructed in 1806-08 to house the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens, established at the urging of Ivan Betskoy and in accordance with a decree of Catherine II ( the Great ) in 1764, borrowing its name from the nearby Smolny Convent.

The Smolny Institute for Noble Girls is featured in Masha and The Youngest Lady in Waiting, two novels by Mara Kay.

Educated at St. Petersburg ’ s exclusive Smolny Convent Institute, von Lieven was assigned as a maid of honour to Maria Fyodorovna.

Simultaneously, on the instructions of the Party Centre of the uprising, detachments of revolutionary soldiers and Red Guards were rushed to the Bolshevik headquarters in the Smolny Institute.

On the night of October 24 Lenin arrived at the Smolny Institute and assumed personal direction of the uprising.

On December 1, 1934, Nikolaev shot Kirov in the Smolny Institute in Leningrad.

Nikolaevsky Military Engineering-Technical Institute of the Armed Forces ( Now the Military Engineering-Technical University ) () is in Saint Petersburg located in its own historical sites near to Engineers Castle, Summer Garden, the Suvorov Museum, Tauride Palace and Smolny Convent.

In 1772 – 1776 Levitzky worked on a series of portraits of the pupils of the privileged women establishment Smolny Institute for Young Ladies in St. Petersburg commissioned by Catherine II.

After 1991, the Smolny was used as the seat of the city mayor ( governor after 1996 ) and city administration.

* June 15 – The Soviet MVD arrests a group of 12 Soviet " refuseniks " at Smolny Airport outside of Leningrad before they can board a 12-seater Aeroflot Antonov An-2 for a flight to Priozersk.

The Smolny, the headquarters of the Petrograd Soviet and of the Bolshevik Central Committee, became the headquarters of the revolution, from which fighting orders emanated.

The Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets opened in the Smolny at 10: 45 pm on October 25 ( November 7 ), 1917, when the uprising in Petrograd was already in motion and the power in the capital had de facto passed into the hands of the Petrograd Soviet.

The rebellious students wanted to seize the city telephone exchange, Peter and Paul Fortress, Smolny and arrest the Soviet government together with the Bolshevik leaders.

The Smolny was Russia's first educational establishment for women and continued to function under the personal patronage of the Russian Empress until just before the 1917 revolution.
