Snarl finally made his first official appearance in the 2006 IDW Beast Wars: The Gathering comic, where it was revealed he was a Maximal protoform from the Axalon.

Snarl wasn't referred by name until later in the series in the " Human Error " 2-parter, the name change coincidently referencing Slag as being an offensive name as Scrapper explained he wanted to call him Slag at first, but Snarl did not like it because he " took it as an insult.
