It is in that year that Waldemar " Major " Fydrych, one of the movement's founders, proclaims the Socialist Surrealism Manifesto, which becomes the ideological backbone behind a gazette known as " The Orange Alternative.

The magazine's tagline has evolved over the years from " The Independent Socialist Newspaper " in 1976, to " The Alternative News Magazine " in the early 1990s, to " With liberty and justice for all ..." today.

In 1997 the party adopted its current name, although in elections it fields candidates as Socialist Alternative, due to the right to stand under the name Socialist Party being held by the Socialist Party of Great Britain.

The four Socialist Party candidates who still stood under the name Socialist Alternative received an additional 3, 298 votes.

In propaganda and publicity material the SPGB often styles itself simply The Socialist Party whilst SPEW uses Socialist Party ( without the definite article ) and contests elections as Socialist Alternative.

At one point, two Trotskyist entryist groups operated within the SP, Offensive, now called Socialist Alternative, and the International Socialists.

Members of the party Socialist Alternative Politics still operate within the SP.

The ISO has close ties with Socialist Alternative in Australia.
